You are currently in hospitality which can be challenging for your personality at times. You want to work in the field of computers and gaming in particular. Coaching Session #2: Saturday 27 November 2021

I discussed the results of the Values Profile assessment with you. The results below are a summary of your top values - those that are most important to you and on which you base your life decisions and goals. Your Core Value is your top value overall. Your Work Value is your top value in your professional life and takes into account aspects like career path, work tasks, and job environment. Your Personal Value is your top value in your personal life and reflects issues related to relationships, hobbies, and worldview. Top Core Value: Theoretical Values People with theoretical values regard logical thought and the pursuit of knowledge very highly. They respect the value of education, both formal and informal, and believe in learning for the sake of learning. They don't make decisions based on a set ideology; rather, they try to base their opinions, beliefs, and decisions on "truth." Rather than listening and blindly following what others are saying, people with theoretical values make their own choices based on all the information available to them. This translates to a very deliberate, logical way of thinking. They want to understand how things in the world work, and are not afraid to ask why something is the way it is. Top Personal Value: Social Values For people whose top personal value is social, their interests, hobbies, home life, and general attitude will revolve around people. In their free time, they seek to be surrounded by those they care about, as relationships, in general, are very important to them. On a wider scale, they may start social causes or respect and support those people who fight for them. Those with social values have a knack for networking and connecting with others - they simply cannot imagine their lives without the camaraderie of others. While almost anyone would dislike conflict, people with strong social values are particularly affected by it. It bothers them to see others in pain or to see a relationship break apart, and so they will strive to help, heal, and resolve disagreements. Top Work Value: Aesthetic Values People for whom aesthetic values are important in work settings love being given tasks and projects that allow them to flex their creative muscle. In fact, to be tied down to any form of structure, be it in the form of rules or work approach, would make them feel stifled. Aesthetic people also need to be given time to "incubate" ideas. They have to be given the opportunity to work at their own pace and follow their own approach, knowing that masterpieces aren't created in a day. Given that they are constantly drawn to and appreciate beauty and harmony, it would be a bit of a faux pas for the appearance of their work environment to not follow this trend. Much like social people love having contact with the public, aesthetic people want to be surrounded by splendor. I discussed the results of the Multidimensional Emotional IQ assessment with you. Your score on this assessment (101/155, 53rd percentile) is reasonably good, but there is some room for improvement. Overall, you are reasonably skilled at understanding and dealing with emotions. Emotional intelligence is not only essential to healthy relationships with others, research has also shown that a healthy EQ contributes to problem-solving ability, leadership ability, goal achievement, and professional success in general. Review the rest of your results to know which areas you need to work on developing the most - awareness is key to helping you find the motivation to improve. The following is a summarized version of your emotional intelligence results, categorized according to areas where you excel, areas where there is room to grow even more, and areas that you will need work on improving. Take small steps if you're not used to expressing emotions. Start with those that are the least intimidating and you will surely find that it's not as bad as you think. On the positive side, begin with genuine compliments and then take it further to an expression of appreciation. When you need to communicate a negative feeling, try writing it if you feel too intimidated to say it. Like learning any new skill, it will get easier with practice.
Consider the implications of not releasing your feelings. A lack of intimacy with others, pent-up feelings, health problems, etc.
Remember that communication involves a lot more than what is just said. Our gestures, expressions, and tone of voice send just as strong (or even stronger signals) than the words we choose and can let us know how others are feeling (and let others know how we are feeling).

#2 You tend to struggle to motivate yourself to overcome difficulties and challenges

View setbacks as short-lived. Whenever you are feeling overwhelmed and find yourself plunging into negativity, remind yourself that things can get better. If you're having a hard time at work, look at it as temporary. Whatever the situation, you can take proactive steps to deal with the underlying issues. There is always some way to improve the situation. You will grow stronger, wiser, or find better ways to cope.
Keep negative situations in perspective. Don't let the emotions of the moment distort your view or sense of self. Getting harsh criticism at work may cause you to question your own competence and self-worth, but you can balance these feelings by reminding yourself of past career successes or other accomplishments. Consider what you can do to ensure that you're not criticized about the same issue again. Remember that your emotions are a temporary state of being, regardless of how permanent or overwhelming they may seem.
Refuse to be a victim. Dr. Martin E.P. Seligman, renowned author and noted expert on positive psychology, states that the feeling of being a victim leads to learned helplessness. If you blame your problems on other people or circumstances, you will avoid taking personal responsibility for your life. While it may be true that there are things beyond your control, the majority of what happens in your life is up to YOU. Life may throw you many curveballs, but it is you who decides how you'll react to them.
Keep your mind focused on possibilities. Think of the best-case scenario or outcome possible and keep your mind focused on that as a goal. When it comes to problems, focus on those aspects of a problem or situation that you can change for the better. Avoid dwelling on matters over which you have no control and cannot change.

#3 You tend to ruminate excessively

Be alert for signs of rumination. Reflecting on a problem or situation is necessary, even if it's an uncomfortable one. You need to be able to make sense of what went wrong, why, and how to deal with it. If, however, you find yourself continually and repeatedly thinking about these matters to the point where you are distracted from everyday life and losing sleep, you are engaging in rumination.
Learn to give your problems to God and take His in exchange. This sounds too good to be true but it works. Read and practice the tips in the article "How to Stop Worrying and Make a Lasting Impact with Your Life."

#4 You are generally unable to assert yourself effectively

Start small. Try to be assertive in mildly tense situations, such as requesting to be seated at a different spot at a restaurant.
Learn to say no. People worry that saying no is selfish. It’s not. Rather, setting healthy limits is important to having healthy relationships.
Let go of guilt. Being assertive can be tough — especially if you’ve been passive or a people-pleaser most of your life. The first few times it can feel unnerving. But remember that being assertive is vital to your well-being. “Assertive behaviour that involves advocating for oneself in a way that is respectful of others is not wrong — it is healthy self-care,” Marter said.
Express your needs and feelings. Don’t assume that someone will automatically know what you need. You have to tell them. Again, be specific, clear, honest, and respectful.

#5 You are not very adaptable

Analyze and evaluate your actions. By thinking about why you are doing everything you do, particularly the things that are habitual, you can determine if they are really necessary in your life, the positive effects they have on your life and if there is even a reason you are doing something. Thinking about different ways to do something can make you more productive and there is always the chance that something that has become a habit is in fact not bringing any advantages to your lifestyle. If this is the case, why not change it up and try different activities or ways of doing things.
Look for areas where it is easy to give up control. Everybody has areas where they are more flexible than others. When starting to try to improve your mental flexibility, look for areas where it is easier for you to sit back and see what happens rather than be in control. This is a good way to see the benefits that you can find by being a little more flexible in your actions and eventually you may be inspired to relinquish control in areas where it is much more difficult for you.
Train yourself to be more flexible. If you have noticed certain habitual behaviours creeping into your life, try to keep yourself flexible by challenging these behaviours. For example, if you always clean the house on the same day of the week, try doing it on a different day, or take a different route to work every day for a week, just to break the mold and practice dealing with change in a positive and flexible way.
Reward yourself for flexibility rather than perfection. When you feel you have stepped back from your normal instincts to take control and been flexible in a situation that is difficult for you, reward yourself with something you enjoy. Throughout life, when we achieve perfection we are rewarded for it by praise, physical rewards for recognition. This can lead to a mindset that makes it hard to settle for anything less than perfection. By rewarding yourself when you have dealt with a situation in a flexible rather than a perfect way, you can reset the idea that only perfection justifies a reward.
Learn from your mistakes. When things go wrong, it is important to look at why it happened and what can be done to avoid such events or improve outcomes in the future. People who carry on doing the same thing regardless of negative outcomes due to habit and inability to change are likely to be less effective in the workplace as well as outside the office and may suffer continually as a result of the same errors, all of which can lead to decreased mental well-being.
