Career Coaching Session #1: Friday 20 February 2015

- Marvin's E-mail address is marvinyoloboi@gmail.com - Marvin is currently 15 years old. - He is attending to St. Anthony’s College and is currently in Form 3. He needs to select his courses for Form 3 in this current term. - Prior to that, Marvin was at North Eastern College in Sangre Grande - When Marvin was young, he used to live by his mother in Valencia but she was as drug addict. Now she is rehabbed and works as a security officer there. - Marvin was at Heart of Mary Care Centre in El Reposo (Toco) for 7 years. Marvin liked it, but he did not get much freedom by himself. He always had to go in groups or to music lessons. There were approximately 15 children there. - Farming was part of daily life, and Marvin learned to plant many things, which he enjoyed. He also worked with the farm animals and so he likes the outdoors. - Because of an incident at the home, Marvin went to live by his sister in Valencia, then to another sister in Arima, and then to his mother in Paloseco. Because of financial restrictions, Marvin’s mother recommended that he come to Marian House. - Careers that Marvin has considered from young are: #1 Aeronautical Engineer (9/10) #2 IT Career (7/10) #3 MMA fighter (7/10) - Marvin can draw well, and has a good imagination for stories, and has always done well in English B. - Marvin is good in music: he plays guitar, a little keyboard, and he plays the drums with good rhythm. - He was born into Jehovah Witness religion, but then got baptized as a Catholic in the first home Heart of Mary Care Centre. He got up to the initiation Sacraments but he is not confirmed as yet. - Finally, we reviewed the VoSCA-St report for Marvin, and the following were the careers recommended for him, which also includes the three careers that he has considered above. Action Plan from Session #1: - Marvin agreed to review the VoSCA-St assessment in more detail. - He also agreed to research on the Internet using the O*Net Online Career Research Tool (www.onetonline.org) the recommended careers above which he scored 6 or more out of 10, and document his research in this password-protected blog under the section at the end called “Leave a Reply”. Career Coaching Session #2: Wednesday 15 April 2015

- Marvin has to get the sign-up form from St. Anthony’s School to see if he can take all of the above subjects, and if not, what changes need to be made so that he can choose the maximum number of careers in his shortlist above. - I reviewed the MEIQ report with Marvin, and we looked at his main limitations. Marvin shared with me that he only feel two emotions: anger and happiness. Sadness was an emotion that he used to feel but not anymore. Acknowledgements from Session #2: - I acknowledged Marvin for being able to narrow down his list of possible subject choices for Form 4. Takeaways from Session #2: - Marvin is feeling better about his possible career choices and subject choices for Form 4. Career Coaching Session #3: Friday 22 May 2015

- I discussed Marvin's results on the MEIQ assessment, and I mentioned to him that he does not seem to be aware of what emotions he is feeling, and even when he does, he is not comfortable with his emotions. So I asked Marvin to share some of the details of his childhood, which he did: - He said that when he was younger, he was free and a lot more playful. He initially lived with his mother and father in Valencia, and then moved to live with his grandmother in Palaseco. Then he went back to live in Valencia to live with his mother and her new husband. Because of his mother's drug addiction at the time, the police were called in, and Marvin was taken to a home called Heart of Mary Care Centre. An incident happened there were the children were no longer allowed to use the iron to press their clothes before going to school, and Marvin and a few of the other children started going by a neighbour's house in order to iron their clothes. When Fr. Trevor Natashsingh found out about this, he asked Marvin to stop or else to go and live by the neighbour's house. Then Marvin moved to live with one of his sisters Lindsay in Valencia, and then with another sister in Arima. He then moved back to live with his mother and grandmother in Palaseco, but because of financial constraints, Marvin ended up at Marin House in early 2015. - When Marvin was in Heart of Mary Care Centre, his older sister Tracy left the home, and Fr. Trevor told Marvin that it was now his responsibility to look after his three younger brothers. Marvin was 14 years old at the time, he he felt that he had to grown up quickly and become a man. He aid that he learned to put his emotions and his past out of his mind and life, and to do his best to look after his younger siblings. - I asked Marvin about his spiritual life, and he said that he was a little disappointed that God did not seem to answer his prayers to keep his mother and father together. I reassured Marvin that God did hear his prayers, and definitely tried to answer them, but God also respects the free will of everyone. So if his mother and father were not open to receiving God's grace in answer to Marvin's prayers, that is why they did not end up staying together. I encouraged Marvin to continue to pray for his mother and father, and to remember that God will always hear his prayers. - Marvin mentioned that his mother is now free of her drug addiction, and she works in security and as a rehab counselor. - I reviewed in more detail Marvin's EIQ scores, and explained to him that it is not healthy to keep our emotions locked away. It is like stuffing tomato paste into a box over and over - eventually the box will explode and there will be tomato paste everywhere in the room. I encouraged Marvin to deal with his lost childhood, and to try to express his true emotions, which he can always do on a daily basis with God in prayer. I also suggested counseling therapy with a member of staff from Dolly and Associates. Acknowledgements from Session #3: - I acknowledged Marvin for being open and sharing the hurtful details of his life growing up. Takeaways from Session #3: - Marvin feels better that he was able to share some of the hurtful things from his past. Action Plan from Session #3: - I encouraged Marvin to deal with his lost childhood, and to try to always express his true emotions, which he can do on a daily basis with God in prayer. I also suggested counseling therapy with a member of staff from Dolly and Associates. - The next session was scheduled for Friday 26 June 2015 at 4:00 PM.

- Marvin is going to Aviation camp, and has a job to sort test papers for Ministry of Education. Acknowledgements from Session #4: - I acknowledged Marvin for getting his Form 4 subjects! - I also acknowledged him for choosing five limitations from his MEIQ report to work on. Takeaways from Session #4: - Marvin is looking forward to improving his emotional IQ by following the advice that I will provide him with in this session's blog notes. Action Plan from Session #4: - Marvin agreed to go to Aviation camp. - He also agreed to start his job sorting test papers for Ministry of Education. - Marvin agreed to work on improving his emotional IQ by following the advice for each of his five chosen EIQ limitations below: #1A His emotional self-awareness is limited and #1B He is not very comfortable with emotions in general:

Stay in touch with your feelings. Pay attention to what triggers them and how you react.
Pay attention to your body when you're upset, sad or angry. What are the signs? Learning to recognize how you react in response to different sentiments can help you become more in tune with your emotions.
Be honest with yourself. Everyone feels things, and it's nothing to hide or be nervous about. Emotions are important signals that we need to listen to in order to feel more fulfilled in life.
Get to know yourself better. For example, make a list of your strengths and limitations. The more in touch you are with who you are, the better you will be able to understand and handle your emotions.
Take small steps if you're not used to expressing emotions. Start with those that are the least intimidating and you will surely find that it's not as bad as you think. On the positive side, begin with genuine compliments and then take it further to an expression of appreciation. When you need to communicate a negative feeling, try writing it if you feel too intimidated to say it. Like learning any new skill, it will get easier with practice.

#2 His approach to problem solving is not always conducive to resolution:

Put aside your own preoccupations. Consider what might be going through other people's minds in different situations. Ask yourself how you would feel in a similar situation - there are always several perspectives. Try to identify at least 2 or 3 different ways to look at it.
Understand that everyone has his or her bad days. Sure it can be hard to overlook it when someone snaps at you or is otherwise unpleasant, but remembering that nearly everyone is unpleasant sometimes when under stress (even you!) can help you learn to take things less personally.
Put yourself in the other person's shoes. Think about how your actions will affect others before you act. If you are unsure, ask! Not everyone thinks the same way you do. If your actions will have an effect on others, ask them if they are ok with the decision before you act.

#3 His mindset could stand to be more positive:

View setbacks as short-lived. Whenever you are feeling overwhelmed and find yourself plunging into negativity, remind yourself that things can get better. If you're having a hard time in a class you're taking, for example, or you're having relationship problems, look at it as temporary. Whatever the situation, you can take proactive steps to deal with the underlying issues. Even if you are faced with something that you will have to deal with for a lifetime (like a health problem or family issue), there is always some way to improve the situation. You will grow stronger, heal, or find better ways to cope.
The good and the bad. Both good and bad feelings facilitate the thinking process by allowing us to view things from different perspectives. Did you ever notice how, when thinking pessimistically about a problem, you come up with solutions that are in line with that thinking, and when you think positively, the perspective and solutions change? Our feelings, good and bad, offer us different perspectives on the world. While one perspective may be more beneficial than the other, both angles offer us valuable information about the world around us, and about ourselves.

#4 He doesn't make it a point to act in accordance with his values:

Don't brush aside your gut instinct or intuition. Gut instinct is that voice in your head, that warning bell, that's trying to tell you that something isn't right. Some refer to it as a sixth sense. Whatever the label, it can offer us valuable information if we take a moment to listen. Those who ignore this inner voice can often end up regretting it. This doesn't mean that logic has no benefits. The perfect balance, in fact, would be to think a situation through, and then going with what feels right.

#5 His impulse control needs improvement:

Try to delay gratification. If you're not used to saying 'No' to others when they ask you to do something or to go somewhere when you have a more important commitment, try saying that you wouldn't mind doing what they ask, but on another day that is more convenient to you.
