Career and Life Coaching Session #1: Friday 8 June 2018

- Annalouisa's E-mail address is g.annalouisa@gmail.com - She attended Mucurapo Junior Secondary School followed by Mucurapo Senior Comprehensive School. - For CXC (2001), she took Maths, English, POA, POB, Social Studies, and Economics. She liked the business subjects most. - She has thought about the following careers: Law and Business. - She worked from 2001 to 2013, and then she did the first two modules of ABE (Association of Business Executives), but then the programme changed so she went into the working world. - In 2016, she did more ABE modules: Organizational Behaviour and Management, Business Environment, Marketing Policy Planning and Communications, Economics with Business, Financial Accounting, Quantitative Methods for Business Management. She still has to take Managerial Accounting and Human Resources to complete her ABE. - Through SAM, she completed her Master's degree at Anglia Ruskin University in Business Administration with emphasis on Leadership, Entrepreneurship and Innovation. - From 2012 and 2015, she was sick and need therapy to recover. - She got an internship at ISPS in 2015 and then got a job as an Admin Assistant 2016 for which she was technically overqualified. Her position recently became redundant in May 2018, which took Annalouisa by surprise! - She took a loan for her Master's and has two and half more years to pay it off. - She lives at home at the moment, and she can go a maximum of another six months on her savings. - We then explored where Annalouisa can go from here in terms of a career path: (1) Start her own business in Consulting (IT, Finance, Transformation, Strategy) (2) She also likes Interior Design but thinks that this might be a side-career. (3) Get a job at another company - Annalouisa is very interested in Data analytics and visualization. - I discussed the results of the VoSCA-R assessment with Annalouisa, specifically her scores in the various categories of Interests, Intelligence Types, Values, and Work Styles. Coaching Session #2: 18 June 2018

- We discussed the results of Annalouisa's Values Profile assessment. The results below are a summary of Annalouisa's top values - those that are most important to her and on which she bases her life decisions and goals. Her Core Value is her top value overall. Her Work Value is her top value in her professional life, and takes into account aspects like career path, work tasks, and job environment. Her Personal Value is her top value in her personal life and reflects issues related to relationships, hobbies, and world view. Top Core Value: Theoretical Values People with theoretical values regard logical thought and the pursuit of knowledge very highly. They respect the value of education, both formal and informal, and believe in learning for the sake of learning. They don't make decisions based on a set ideology; rather, they try to base their opinions, beliefs, and decisions on "truth." Rather than listening and blindly following what others are saying, people with theoretical values make their own choices based on all the information available to them. This translates to a very deliberate, logical way of thinking. They want to understand how things in the world work, and are not afraid to ask why something is the way it is. Top Personal Value: Theoretical Values For people whose top personal value is theoretical, their interests, hobbies, home life and general attitude revolve around feeding their intellect and knowledge base. These are people who can be highly curious, and are constantly on the path of seeking truth. Others may view them as bookish, highly rational, and analytical. Theoretical people hate settling for ambiguous explanations about anything. As children, and probably even as adults, they'll always want to know why. As friends and confidantes, theoretical people will offer straightforward, unbiased, and logical advice. This is due to their ability to look at the world objectively, without letting emotions cloud their judgment. This can also mean, however, that they can come off as indifferent and even insensitive on occasion, at least to those who are more emotion-based. Top Work Value: Theoretical Values People for whom theoretical values are important in work settings are happiest and utilize their talents best when they are intellectually challenged. Much like Sherlock Holmes becoming melancholic when he didn't have a mind-boggling case to work on, theoretical people need to be doing something that involves conscious effort and thought. Set them to a task where they need to figure out the solution to a problem or make sense of abstract information or data, and they will make sense of it. Without challenge, they become apathetic. While they can do well on group projects, theoretical individuals may work best on their own, where they can research, theorize, and come up with their own ideas. Career and Life Coaching Session #3: Monday 25 June 2018

- We discussed Anna's Emotional IQ assessment. Anna's score on this assessment (114/155, 84th percentile) is fairly good. Overall, she is quite capable of understanding and dealing with emotions. Emotional intelligence is not only essential to healthy relationships with others, but research has also shown that a healthy EQ contributes to problem-solving ability, leadership ability, goal achievement, and professional success in general. Review the rest of Annalouisa's results to know which areas she might need to work on developing. - The following is a summarized version of Annalouisa's emotional intelligence results, categorized according to areas where she excels, areas where there is room to grow even more, and areas that she will need work on improving. You should only work on mastering one limitation at a time, which usually takes approximately two months to develop "muscle memory": #1 You have shown the capacity to be fairly empathetic

Empathy. While you certainly can't fake empathy, you can increase your connection to other people by truly listening and trying to put yourself in their shoes.
Put empathy in action. Get involved in helping people in some way (i.e. volunteering); the closer you get to a situation, the more you will realize the difficulties others might be facing.
Put aside your own preoccupations. Consider what might be going through other people's minds in different situations. Ask yourself how you would feel in a similar situation - there are always several perspectives. Try to identify at least 2 or 3 different ways to look at it.
Understand that everyone has his or her bad days. Sure it can be hard to overlook it when someone snaps at you or is otherwise unpleasant, but remembering that nearly everyone is unpleasant sometimes when under stress (even you!) can help you learn to take things less personally.
Put yourself in the other person's shoes. Think about how your actions will affect others before you act. If you are unsure, ask! Not everyone thinks the same way you do. If your actions will have an effect on others, ask them if they are ok with the decision before you act.
Be aware of how others respond to you. Pay attention to how others are reacting, and what they are communicating to you. Putting in the extra effort to really listen and observe can teach you a lot about human interaction and emotions.
Don't fall victim to "The Fundamental Attribution Error". We as humans are forever trying to figure out the causes of other's actions. All too often, we attribute misfortunate behavior on the part of others to dispositional rather than situational factors. For instance, writing others off as jerks for snapping at you rather than looking for external causes such as being sick or having been fired that day. As a result, we are less forgiving than many situations call for. Try to understand that others are under just as much pressure and stress as you are and as a result, their behavior may not always represent who they are as people.

#2 You have some self-confidence, but can fall victim to self-doubt from time to time

View setbacks as short-lived. Whenever you are feeling overwhelmed and find yourself plunging into negativity, remind yourself that things can get better. If you're having a hard time at work, look at it as temporary. Whatever the situation, you can take proactive steps to deal with the underlying issues. There is always some way to improve the situation. You will grow stronger, wiser, or find better ways to cope.
Keep negative situations in perspective. Don't let the emotions of the moment distort your view or sense of self. Getting harsh criticism at work may cause you to question your own competence and self-worth, but you can balance these feelings by reminding yourself of past career successes or other accomplishments. Consider what you can do to ensure that you're not criticized about the same issue again. Remember that your emotions are a temporary state of being, regardless of how permanent or overwhelming they may seem.
Refuse to be a victim. Dr. Martin E.P. Seligman, renowned author and noted expert on positive psychology, states that the feeling of being a victim leads to learned helplessness. If you blame your problems on other people or circumstances, you will avoid taking personal responsibility for your life. While it may be true that there are things beyond your control, the majority of what happens in your life is up to YOU. Life may throw you many curve-balls, but it is you who decides how you'll react to them.
Keep your mind focused on possibilities. Think of the best-case scenario or outcome possible and keep your mind focused on that as a goal. When it comes to problems, focus on those aspects of a problem or situation that you can change for the better. Avoid dwelling on matters over which you have no control and cannot change.
Be alert for signs of rumination. Reflecting on a problem or situation is necessary, even if it's an uncomfortable one. You need to be able to make sense of what went wrong, why, and how to deal with it. If, however, you find yourself continually and repeatedly thinking about these matters to the point where you are distracted from everyday life and losing sleep, you are engaging in rumination.

#3 You are willing to assert yourself on some occasions

Assert yourself when necessary. Being assertive requires a certain degree of comfort with vulnerability, and that's probably one of the main reasons why people hesitate to speak up for themselves. Assertiveness means risking dissention, rejection, and embarrassment. It can spark conflict if the message doesn't go over well. If you find it difficult to speak up or say "no" to others, remember this: Not speaking up communicates to others the erroneous belief that your needs don't matter; that you are not worthy enough to ask for what we want.
Assertiveness training can be extremely beneficial, along with the realization that being assertive does not imply or require aggression.
Start small. Try to be assertive in mildly tense situations, such as requesting to be seated at a different spot at a restaurant.
Learn to say no. People worry that saying no is selfish. It’s not. Rather, setting healthy limits is important to having healthy relationships.
Let go of guilt. Being assertive can be tough — especially if you’ve been passive or a people-pleaser most of your life. The first few times it can feel unnerving. But remember that being assertive is vital to your well-being. “Assertive behaviour that involves advocating for oneself in a way that is respectful of others is not wrong — it is healthy self-care,” Marter said.
Express your needs and feelings. Don’t assume that someone will automatically know what you need. You have to tell them. Again, be specific, clear, honest and respectful.

#4 You are not very adaptable

Analyse and evaluate your actions. By thinking about why you are doing everything you do, particularly the things that are habitual, you can determine if they are really necessary in your life, the positive effects they have on your life and if there is even a reason you are doing something. Thinking about different ways to do something can make you more productive and there is always the chance that something that has become a habit is in fact not bringing any advantages to your lifestyle. If this is the case, why not change it up and try different activities or ways of doing things on for size.
Look for areas where it is easy to give up control. Everybody has areas where they are more flexible than others. When starting to try to improve your mental flexibility, look for areas where it is easier for you to sit back and see what happens rather than be in control. This is a good way to see the benefits that you can find by being a little more flexible in your actions and eventually you may be inspired to relinquish control in areas where it is much more difficult for you.
Train yourself to be more flexible. If you have noticed certain habitual behaviours creeping into your life, try to keep yourself flexible by challenging these behaviours. For example, if you always clean the house on the same day of the week, try doing it on a different day, or take a different route to work every day for a week, just to break the mold and practice dealing with change in a positive and flexible way.
Reward yourself for flexibility rather than perfection. When you feel you have stepped back from your normal instincts to take control and been flexible in a situation which is difficult for you, reward yourself with something you enjoy. Throughout life, when we achieve perfection we are rewarded for it by praise, physical rewards for recognition. This can lead to a mindset that makes it hard to settle for anything less than perfection. By rewarding yourself when you have dealt with a situation in a flexible rather than a perfect way, you can reset the idea that only perfection justifies a reward.
Learn from your mistakes. When things go wrong, it is important to look at why it happened and what can be done to avoid such events or improve outcomes in the future. People who carry on doing the same thing regardless of negative outcomes due to habit and inability to change are likely to be less effective in the workplace as well as outside the office and may suffer continually as a result of the same errors, all of which can lead to decreased mental well-being.
Look at things from others' perspectives. By opening yourself up to other people’s ideas and mindsets you can change your whole way of thinking and experience new and exciting things both in work and life. Even if your first reaction is to disagree with a particular point of view, think it over before you voice your opinion and open yourself up to the possibility that there may be something to gain from this other perspective. This type of thinking can help you to take more risks, try new things and generally keep life exciting. You could also try combining the two perspectives and trying to come up with a way that both can work together in harmony, again expanding your views and coming up with new solutions which can be particularly important in the workplace.

#5 You do not have a strong sense of self-worth and self-respect

Be cautious about the language you use to describe yourself. Don't exaggerate. If you made a mistake for example, you are not stupid or dumb, even if you regard the mistake as a dumb one. Instead, acknowledge that you are sometimes careless and need to work on that. When you regularly use self-deprecating language, you reinforce the belief that you are incompetent or inferior...and may influence other people's views of you as well.
Don't compare yourself to others. You may look at someone and think they possess some quality or advantage that you don't, but the fact is they may be looking at you and thinking the very same thing. Besides, someone who is seemingly happy or successful may be going through difficulties that you don't know about. Judge yourself by your own standards, because every person is unique.
Practice positive and empowering affirmations. This isn't just a philosophy - it has a scientific basis. The success of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, for example, lies in the reprogramming of the brain. Write 5 or 10 self-affirming statements ("I am healthy, wealthy, and wise") and repeat them to yourself every day for several times a day. Don't just say them 3 times and then spend the rest of the day criticizing yourself or complaining. Say your affirmations as often as you can, whether you're on the way to work, cleaning the house, or shopping. When a negative thought pops into your mind, replace it with something positive - and say that positive statement three times. Continue to practice your affirmations for as long as it takes for them to sink in. It will feel silly at first, even fake and untrue, but that's from years of brain programming in the opposite, negative direction. It can be done, if you make it a habit.
Boosting your confidence is a proactive process. If you're lacking a little faith in yourself and in your abilities, try doing things that build your confidence and nerve. If you'd like to teach a class for example, take some courses yourself to brush up. Offer to teach a few of your friends at home to start out. With experience, you will become more comfortable and assured of your abilities. Remember that each small success we have helps build confidence en route to our ultimate goal.
Shun perfectionism. There is a high correlation between perfectionism and low self-esteem. The more you strive to be perfect, the more frustrated you become when you realize it's impossible. Be aware of any perfectionistic tendencies you have and keep them in check. Remember, mistakes and failures are stepping stones, not stop signs. They offer experience and learning opportunities.
Make a list of your accomplishments. Include anything that made you feel good about yourself, without thinking about whether it is technically an accomplishment or not. This list is solid proof that you have the ability to make things happen and to achieve something. Refer to it whenever you doubt yourself.
