Career Coaching Session #1: Tuesday October 31, 2013

- Rebekha's E-mail address is rebanprov@hotmail.com Rebekha is seventeen (17) years old and currently attends Holy Name Convent in Lower Six. - She attained five 1's and three 2's at CSEC with Distinctions in Accounts and Spanish. - She is uncertain as to what she wants to do/be in the future and is having a frustrating time transitioning from CSEC level to CAPE level. She is pursuing studies in Accounts, Spanish and Biology. She likes Accounts, and finds Biology interesting but a lot of work, but she does not really like Spanish because of the teacher. - I asked Rebekha is she dreamed of any careers as a girl growing up, and she said that when she was very young, she thought about being an actress or a Vet, but those were just passing fads. She shared with me that she has a fair amount of compassion for other people, and her friends often confide in her when they are having problems. - I discussed the results of the VoSCA assessment with Rebekha, specifically her scores in the various categories of Interests, Intelligence Types, Values, and Work Styles. Her scores can be reviewed in the report itself. - Here are the careers that the VoSCA assessment recommended for Rebekha and how she rated them in terms of her passion level (1 is no passion and 10 is the highest passion): #1 Psychology Teachers, Postsecondary (8/10) #2 Sociology Teachers, Postsecondary (6/10) #3 Social Work Teachers, Postsecondary (7/10) #4 Education Teachers, Postsecondary (6/10) #5 Low Vision Therapists, Orientation and Mobility Specialists, and Vision Rehabilitation Therapists (8.5/10) #6 Speech-Language Pathology Assistants (7/10) #7 Home Economics Teachers, Postsecondary (7.5/10) #8 Directors, Religious Activities and Education (6/10) #9 Sociologists (6/10) #10 Instructional Coordinators (6/10) #11 Farm and Home Management Advisors (4/10) #12 Social Science Research Assistants (4/10) - We discussed how Rebekha would rate herself in terms of her emotional IQ (EIQ) and she said that she sometimes keeps her emotions private, but then after a while, she can lose her patience with those around her. I stressed the importance of developing a healthy EIQ as Psychologists have recently discovered that it is as important and maybe even more important than having a high IQ score. I asked her if she would be willing to do the MEIQ assessment and she said yes. - I also asked her if she would be willing to complete the Values Profile assessment as this would also help her in discerning the best career path to match her values, and she said yes. - We also discussed Rebekha's spirituality, and she said that she attends Mass faithfully every Sunday with her family, and that she is always asking God for help throughout the day, which I highly commended her for! I advised Rebekha to be careful when she starts attending University because a lot of young people unfortunately lose their faith at this point in her life. She assured me that this would not happen to her. - We also discussed Rebekha's physical health and exercise habits, and she said that she used to be very active in sports up until Form 4, but that she is not very active right now. She did share that she would like to get back into exercising because she knows that it would make her feel better, again which I commended her for. Acknowledgements from Session #1: - I acknowledged Rebekha for completing the VoSCA assessment - I also acknowledged her for coming to these Career Coaching sessions to get a better understanding of what career path she would like to pursue. - I also acknowledged her for her solid spirituality, and her desire to always keep her faith no matter what. Takeaways from Session #1: - Rebekha liked the process of doing the assessment she feels a little clearer about the process of career discovery. Action Plan from Session #1: - Rebekha agreed to review the VoSCA report in more detail and research on the Internet using the O*Net Online Career Research Tool (www.onetonline.org) the recommended careers above which she scored 6 or more out of 10, and document her research in this password-protected blog under the section at the end called “Leave a Reply”. Career Coaching Session #2: Tuesday November 5, 2013

- Rebekha did some additional research, and added the career of Physical Therapist to her list of interesting careers. - I asked her about her interest in the field of medicine in general and she said that it was not for her. - I pointed out to Rebekha that probably because she said in her first assessment that she wanted to achieve a Ph. D. that it recommended so many teaching related careers. I asked her if she saw herself as having a "teacher's personality" and she said no. We then reviewed the list of recommended careers from the VoSCA report, and derived new ones related to the teaching ones. In particular, I asked Rebekha to rate the following five Psychology related careers, which she did as follows: #13 Counseling Psychologist (8.5/10) #14 Clinical Psychologist (7/10) #15 Industrial/Organizational Psychologist (8.5/10) #16 Child Psychologist for Preteens (8.5/10) #17 Life Coach (8/10) - We then reviewed Rebekha's Values Profile assessment, and the results below are a summary of Rebekha's top values - those that are most important to her and on which she bases her life decisions and goals. Her Core Value is her top value overall. Her Work Value is her top value in her professional life, and takes into account aspects like career path, work tasks, and job environment. Her Personal Value is her top value in her personal life and reflects issues related to relationships, hobbies, and world view. Top Core Value: Social Values Those who place importance on social values enjoy being helpful, kind and agreeable. They think it's important to try to find the good in everyone, and have faith that if they dig deep enough, they'll find it. They give of themselves, whether on a small scale (e.g. by spending time with a friend in need), or on a global scale (e.g. by volunteering for a human rights organization). In helping others overcome obstacles, people with social values hope to assist them in becoming the best they can be. They are giving and compassionate individuals. Social people likely become passionately angry at signs of social injustice. While almost anyone would dislike conflict, people with strong social values are particularly affected by it. It bothers them to see others in pain or to see a relationship break apart, and so they will strive to help, heal, and resolve disagreements. Top Work Value: Social Values People for whom social values are important in work settings are happiest and utilize their talents best when their job does some good for mankind, they have contact with people, and/or they do not feel that they are taking advantage of others. People with social values either work or see themselves working in a "helping" profession (e.g. medicine, nursing, teaching, or counseling). Even if they don't, they probably bring a sense of humanity to their position that makes them considerate to fellow employees, employers and clients. They are often very personable colleagues - people may come to them for help and advice, and they are often well-liked. If social people work in a position where they do not have contact with others, either coworkers or the public, they may feel lonely and frustrated, especially if their job doesn't satisfy any other values they may hold. Career Coaching Session #3: Tuesday November 19, 2013

- I discussed with Rebekha the three levels of emotional health, namely:

Extreme 1: The person who shows very little emotion.
Extreme 2: The person who shows too much emotion.
Balanced: The person who shows balanced emotions.

- I then asked Rebekha how she would describe herself, and she said that she oscillates between extreme 1 and extreme 2. - We reviewed Rebekha's MEIQ assessment report. The test assesses Rebekha's capacity to: recognize her own emotions and those of others; understand how best to motivate herself; become close to others; and manage her own feelings and those of others. Overall Results EQ score = 91/155 Percentile score = 27 IMPORTANT NOTE: The combination of self-report and ability components in a test could result in contradictory results. A person may underestimate or overestimate their emotional intelligence and therefore, show differences in their self-reported and ability components of emotional intelligence. Please keep this in mind when reading Rebekha's results. - Rebekha's score on this assessment is satisfactory, but there is room for improvement. Overall, she is adequately skilled at understanding and dealing with emotions, but she needs to further develop her skills. Awareness is key to helping her find the motivation to improve in this area, and knowing which areas she most needs to work on developing. - I asked Rebekha how much she would like to improve her EQ score in the coming year, and she said that she would like to improve it from 91/155 to 110/155, which I commended her for. - I asked her to also rate her desire and willingness to work and persevere in achieving the above improvements, and she replied with:
