Career Coaching Session #1: Monday 23 February 2015

- Stacy's E-mail address is stacynicolesammy@gmail.com - Stacy is currently 43 years old. - She majored in English Literature at University, and then was a teacher at Trinity College in Moca, Trinidad for seven years. - Stacy then ventured out of teaching and responded to an ad in the newspaper for a job at Eli Lilly. She got hired on the second round, and grew into the position of Sales Rep, which lasted 7 1/2 years. - She then transitioned into HR and training, and focused on development plans for employees. - Because many of Lilly's patents were expiring, and because the company did not want ot merge with any other pharmaceutical companies for tax reasons, Lilly started to trim down its workforce. So Stacy's HR Associate position became redundant, and she went back into sales. - She then took up a position with Lilly training employees locally and in South and Central America, and she trained both in English and Spanish. But she found training in Spanish challenging because it was not her native language. While working at Lilly, Stacy also do some private consulting on the side relating to team building. - Lilly gave Stacy a severance package on 5 December 2014, which was quite generous, and it should last her for approximately two years. However, Stacy is anxious not to use up this package too quickly, and hence the reason that she would like to quickly find another full-time job, or start her own full-time business. - At the moment, Stacy is providing the following Executive Coaching services to clients like T&TEC and PML, mainly to groups of employees as opposed to one-on-one:

- If Stacy gets a full-time job in the near future, she would ideally prefer to be a Training Development Manager. She recently went to an interview with AstraZeneca as a District Sales Manager, and she was not interested in getting back into sales. - Stacy's preference is to have her own business in Executive Coaching and Consulting, but she is afraid of the unsteady revenue stream, and of having to use up too much of her severance package as starting capital. She wouldn't mind trying it for about four months to see if she is comfortable with the revenue stream, and the viability of her business in Trinidad and Tobago. - Stacy also expressed a willingness to invest in a foreign consultancy brand, and would be willing to go abroad for training. She would then use some of her capital to purchase a "franchise" to bring back to Trinidad and Tobago, such as was done with Dale Carnegie. - Stacy said that she recently purchased a home in St. Joseph, and thus has to pay her mortgage every month, along with other expenses related to her home. That is why a steady income is important to her! - I recommended that Stacy contact Christina Bahadoor-Hosein of Eve Anderson Recruitment Limited at 627-8233 x 113, so that she will get the ball rolling for in terms of getting her registered in the database. - I also shared with Stacy that I obtained my my Certified Professional Coach (CPC) designation from International Coach Academy (ICA), which is the ICF certified academy. They think it's important to try to find the good in everyone, and have faith that if they dig deep enough, they'll find it. She currently does not practice the formal part of her faith but does have a relationship with God, and prays in her own way. She said that she was somewhat turned off of the organized part of religion because she saw people around her who were practicing their faith, but were not pillars of strength when certain crises happened in her family. Career Coaching Session #2: Wednesday 4 March 2015

- During this session, we discussed the results of Stacy's Multidimensional Emotional IQ assessment. Her overall results were: IQ score = 120/155 Percentile score = 91 Stacy's score on this assessment is fairly good. Overall, she is quite capable of understanding and dealing with emotions. Review the rest of her results to know which areas she might need to work on developing. - The following is a summarized version of Stacy's results, categorized as Strengths, Potential Strengths, and Limitation. Advice for Improving Stacy's Limitations Becoming More Assertive

Start small. Try to be assertive in mildly tense situations, such as requesting to be seated at a different spot at a restaurant.
Learn to say no. People worry that saying no is selfish. It’s not. Rather, setting healthy limits is important to having healthy relationships.
Let go of guilt. Being assertive can be tough — especially if you’ve been passive or a people-pleaser most of your life. The first few times it can feel unnerving. But remember that being assertive is vital to your well-being. “Assertive behavior that involves advocating for oneself in a way that is respectful of others is not wrong — it is healthy self-care,” Marter said.
Express your needs and feelings. Don’t assume that someone will automatically know what you need. You have to tell them. Again, be specific, clear, honest and respectful.

Becoming More Independent

Consider the implications for your life of always putting aside what you want to do or what is important to you to always accommodate other people's wishes.
Remember that other people constantly change their opinions about you, and that looking for positive affirmation from others by always trying to be a people-pleaser usually never works anyway. Try to see yourself as a valuable human being in the eyes of God, who is the only one whose opinion of us matters!

- We also discussed Stacy's current financial requirements, and she said that she needed a minimum of $15,000 per month to pay her basic expenses. Her current consultancy firm SPIRH, which she has been operating for 2 to 3 months, generated approximately $7,000 for February, $21,000 for March, and is projected to generate $10,000 for April. This averages to about $13,000 per month, and that's only with word-of-mouth referrals and no active marketing! Stacy can leverage her colleague in IT to create a website, and she can work on some marketing strategies and strategic partnerships in order to actively promote her consultancy business. She should then be able to achieve her goal of getting 4 to 5 jobs per month, at an average of $6,000 per job. This would give her a monthly income of about $30,000 from which she can easily meet her monthly expenses. - Stacy said that she is willing to pursue her own consultancy business as well as maybe a tour-guide business using some of her nest-egg from Lilly, but she does not want to significantly deplete this nest egg, which I commended her for. - She will also continue to pursue finding a full-time job through Eve Anderson, ideally as a Training and Development Manager. - I also produced a printed PDF document for Stacy listing current jobs on CaribbeanJobs.com that were similar in nature to Training and Development Manager, which is a career that Stacy expressed the most interest in from our first session. The PDF document can be found at the top of this blog. Acknowledgements from Session #2: - I acknowledged Stacy for completing the MEIQ assessment. - I also acknowledged her for attending these two Career Coaching sessions in order to get a clear picture of her career path from this point forward. Takeaways from Session #2: - Stacy feels that we were able to accomplish the goals set out at the start of the Career Coaching engagement, and she has a clearer plan to either pursue her own businesses or secure a full-time position at a company.
