Career Coaching Session #1: Saturday 12 December 2015

- Shobha's E-mail address is shobha.w.rampersad@gmail.com - She has been working at Nu-Iron Limited for the past 7-8 years as an Admin Assistant to HR Manager and GM Manager. She says that she would rate this job as 7/10. - Prior to that, she worked as the Office Administrator for a foreign company SR Steel that had to pack up and eventually leave Trinidad. - Prior to that, she was in the Custom Brokerage field for 9 years. - She has taken some courses at SBCS and UWI in the areas of Law, Paralegal, Psycholgy, and Interior Design. - Shobha also loves law and politics. - Shobha says if she were to dream of her ideal career, it would have the following qualities:

Self-employed eventually
In the creative side such as interior design
She thought of traveling to Europe to gain experience in interior design
Financially, she would have to work for a firm to gain experience and contacts for a few years before considering starting her own business

- The GM at Nu-Iron Limited was surprised that Shobha was at the front desk for so long and had not progressed in her career. Even though all employees at Nu-Iron have a PCIP (Personal Continuous Improvement Plan), she was recently rated on an assessment by her coworkers, and was rated as not being a team player, which concerned Shobha because she believes that the reason that she might be perceived that way, is that she doesn't like it when other employees do not give 100% in the quality of their work. - I then discussed the results of the VoSCA assessment with Shobha, specifically her scores in the various categories of Interests, Intelligence Types, Values, and Work Styles. - Shobha said that she did extensive research on the careers on her current shortlist, and she has made the following adjustments to the ratings:

Paralegal has dropped from 8 to 6/10 because courses are during day
Editors has dropped from 7 to 6/10 because of negative growth
Producers has stayed at 7/10 because of slow growth
First Line Supervisors of Administrator Support Workers has stayed at 7/10 because it’s a promotion from her current position but it may be a bit routine
Radio and Television Announcers has increased from 6 to 7/10 because of diversity and knowledge
Broadcast News Analyst has increased from 6 to 7/10 because of diversity and knowledge
Human Resource Specialist has stayed at 6/10
Regulatory Affairs Specialists has increased from 6 to 7/10

- Next we discussed the results of Shobha's Values Profile assessment. The results below are a summary of Shobha's top values - those that are most important to her and on which she bases her life decisions and goals. Her Core Value is her top value overall. Her Work Value is her top value in her professional life, and takes into account aspects like career path, work tasks, and job environment. Her Personal Value is her top value in her personal life and reflects issues related to relationships, hobbies, and world view. Top Core Value: Traditional Values Those who uphold this value live their life according to an established belief system, whether it is religious, philosophical, or moral. They don't tend to question their beliefs; they simply live their life in the way that they feel is right and according to the values that were instilled in them over time by their parents and culture. In situations where most people's morals would waver, traditional people strive to staunchly stick by them. As friends and confidantes, theoretical people will offer straightforward, unbiased, and logical advice. This is due to their ability to look at the world objectively, without letting emotions cloud their judgment. This can also mean, however, that they can come off as indifferent and even insensitive on occasion, at least to those who are more emotion-based. Top Work Value: Realistic Values People for whom realistic values are important in work settings are happiest and utilize their talents best in positions where they can see tangible results of the fruits of their labor. They need to feel that they are accomplishing something with their work, as they desire to be productive and make an impact in some way. Hands-on projects are often their specialty, although they excel at any task that requires a practical and systematic approach. People with realistic values are not afraid of hard work, but like barter systems of old, they want to make sure that they are given fair compensation for their efforts. Given their more down-to-earth personality, projects that require them to think "outside the box" may not be their specialty.
