Career Coaching Session #1: Friday October 19, 2012

- Paul's E-mail address is paullambie@hotmail.com - Paul is 16 years old and he currently attends secondary school at The British Academy. He is currently in Form 5 preparing for Cambridge GCE O Level exams. He has no plans to go into Form 6. - He is taking the following subjects in Form 5, and how he rates his liking for each of these subjects, and how well he is doing in them:

Geography (likes it and is doing well in it)
Business (likes it somewhat and is doing fairly well in it)
History (doesn't like it that much)

- Paul has thought about careers in Engineering, Architecture, Medicine and Business. - His father owns his own business called Lamco, and specializes in shower enclosures. Paul has worked with his Dad in the family business and has thought about owning his own business one day. - I discussed the results of the VoSPA assessment with Paul, specifically his scores in the various categories of Interests, Intelligence Types, Values, and Work Styles. His scores can be reviewed in the report itself, but below are the graphs of his scores:

- Paul seems to lean more toward a career in professional soccer, but if that does not work out, he could see himself in the fields of Engineering or Business. I suggested that Paul might want to complete the Values Profile assessment to get another angle on which career categories might suite him best, and he agreed. - We discussed how Paul would rate himself in terms of his emotional IQ (EIQ) and he said that he is very comfortable with his emotions. - We didn't discuss Paul's spirituality in this session. - We also discussed Paul's physical health and exercise habits, and he said that he is quite athletic and plays soccer at a high level. He hopes to become a professional soccer player one day if he gets the right breaks. - He trains with a good team in Trinidad and his coach is planning to take him and a few other good players to Brazil this coming summer, and he could be in Brazil training with Brazilian teams for about 6 to 8 months. From there, his coach will try to get him a placement in teams in either Europe or North America, and Paul feels that he has a 75% chance of succeeding in his bid to become a professional soccer player. Acknowledgements from Session #1: - I acknowledged Paul for taking the time and commitment to engage in these career coaching sessions as it will help him find the right career path which is a big part of his future. - I also acknowledged him for taking care of his physical health through regular exercise and soccer. Takeaways from Session #1: - Paul liked the process of doing the assessment he feels a little clearer about the process of career discovery. Career Coaching Session #2:

- Paul and I did the necessary research into the various careers on the shortlist from shortlist from session 1, using the website www.onetonline.net, and we documented our findings in this password-protected blog. - After gleaning information from the website on the career of Industrial-Organizational Psychologist, Paul dropped the rating of this career from 5/10 to 3/10, and he asked that it be taken off the shortlist. - The following careers from the VoSPA assessment still interest Paul, in order of his passion level:

- I asked Paul if he would be willing to do the Values Profile assessment to get a different angle on his values and career interests and he agreed to do so. Acknowledgements from Session #2: - I acknowledged Paul for attempting to do the research on the various careers using the O*Net Online tool, even though he did not know where to enter the information into the blog. I clarified this with Paul and so he is now comfortable with using the blog. Takeaways from Session #2: - Paul is starting to get more clarity on his career path, although more research and sessions are needed. Action Plan from Session #2: - Paul will complete the Values Profile assessment before the next session. - Paul will continue researching the careers on the VoSPA shortlist. - The next session schedule was scheduled for Friday November 2, 2012 at 3:00 PM.

Career Coaching Session #3: Friday November 2, 2012

- We reviewed Paul's Values Profile report together and the results below are a summary of Paul's top values - those that are most important to him and on which he bases his life decisions and goals. His Core Value is his top value overall. His Work Value is his top value in his professional life, and takes into account aspects like career path, work tasks, and job environment. His Personal Value is his top value in his personal life and reflects issues related to relationships, hobbies, and world view. Top Core Value: Realistic Values People with realistic values are most concerned with being productive and useful, and desire to achieve efficient return on the investment of their time, money and effort. They are practical, reasonable, and think their actions through before they act. Investing for their future is one of your top priorities. The affection that people with realistic values share with their family and friends is probably expressed in non-verbal ways, such as putting in time or effort to make a gift, or simply being there when they are needed. Giving themselves is their way of showing that they care and to them, is more meaningful then words. Top Personal Value: Realistic Values For people whose top personal value is realistic, their general attitude can best be described in one word - practical. The thoughts and concerns of realistic people never stray far from the "real" world. Friends and family members would probably describe realistic people as down-to-earth, sometimes even to a fault. People with this value are rarely known to entertain pipe dreams, may even shun anything (and sometimes anyone) that is too idealistic, and are known to tell it like it is. Their common sense, pragmatic approach to life is great for dealing with concrete problems like financial issues, but abstract matters of the heart can be an area of discomfort for some realistic people. Hobbies and interests for people with this type are likely to be simple, but often involve physical activity or working with their hands. Top Work Value: Realistic Values People for whom realistic values are important in work settings are happiest and utilize their talents best in positions where they can see tangible results of the fruits of their labor. They need to feel that they are accomplishing something with their work, as they desire to be productive and make an impact in some way. Hands-on projects are often their specialty, although they excel at any task that requires a practical and systematic approach. People with realistic values are not afraid of hard work, but like barter systems of old, they want to make sure that they are given fair compensation for their efforts. Given their more down-to-earth personality, projects that require them to think "outside the box" may not be their specialty. They could potentially complement creative people and projects in the sense of making sure proposed visions and ideas are feasible, but they can clash with more unconventional thinkers.

Career Coaching Session #4: Friday November 30, 2012

- We reviewed the two interview questionnaires that Paul completed with the lawyer Nicole De Verteuil and with the Surgeon Dr. Godfrey Araujo. Here are the results of those interviews:

- Paul said that after interviewing the lawyer, his passion level for this profession went from a 8/10 to a 1/10! This is because of all the reading and studying that is involved in becoming a lawyer and practicing as one. - I asked Paul if he likes or dislikes reading in general, and he said that he likes to read in the field of Biology. He wants to keep Doctor/Surgeon on his shortlist of careers and still rates it 9/10. - Chief Executive, Entrepreneur/Business Owner are still on his list of careers with a rating of 8/10. - Professional Soccer Player is still on his list, and I asked Paul what he felt his chances of succeeding in this career was. He said that his chances were about 60%, and he would like to enroll in a soccer camp this coming summer either at FIU or USF in Florida, or St. John's in New York. - If Paul does not succeed in his quest to become either a Professional Soccer player or Doctor/Surgeon, then Paul said that ideally he would like to own a business that encompasses the following services:

Acknowledgements from Session #4: - I acknowledged Paul for completing the two interviews with the lawyer and the surgeon. - I also acknowledged him for thinking what his career options would be if he were not to be successful in his quest to become a Professional Soccer Player. Takeaways from Session #4: - Paul is feeling a lot better about his career options, especially beyond the sports field. Action Plan from Session #4: - I was going to provide Paul with the names of a few individuals who have University degrees say in Business, and who are currently CEO's of companies, so that he can interview one of them. - He also agreed to think more about the business idea in the health, sports, and nutrition fields. - The next session was scheduled for Tuesday December 18, 2012 at 11:00 AM.

Career Coaching Session #5: Tuesday December 18, 2012

- Paul wants to apply to premed programs at US Universities and is aiming to take his SAT exams in January 2013. - I encouraged him to do some practice SAT tests on the Internet as this will help him to prepare. - I also encouraged him to start applying now to US Universities in order not to miss the deadlines for entry in September 2013. - Paul shared with me that he has a US passport which will help him and his parents with the cost of University in the US. - Paul hopes to get either a partial or full scholarship based on his SAT scores as well as University soccer camps which he plans on attending at Easter or summer of 2013. - Paul's plan "A" is to get into University in September 2013. - If that does not work out, his plan "B" is to get into University in September 2014, work for a year to make some money, try for better SAT scores, and further develop his soccer skills. - Paul's preference is to get into medical school as opposed to just getting an undergraduate degree in natural sciences. - His father always wanted to be a medical doctor, and worked as a male nurse in the US. Paul said that this is part of the reason for him wanting to be a doctor, but the other part of it is his own desire to want to become a doctor to help those in need of healing. - Paul would also consider becoming a Physiotherapist because this could fit well with his like for soccer and sports in general. He could see himself working to help others get over sports related injuries. - We also discussed Paul's idea of one day owning his own business that encompasses the following services, and ideally if that happens, Paul would still like to be a doctor or Physiotherapist:

- I asked Paul if he would be willing to take the MEIQ assessment and he agreed to do so. He actually started the assessment while at my office and completed about half of it. Acknowledgements from Session #5: - I acknowledged Paul for his perseverance is coming to the Career Coaching sessions. Takeaways from Session #5: - Paul feels like he is getting closer to his end goal of narrowing down his final career choice. Action Plan from Session #5: - Paul agreed to complete the MEIQ assessment. - He also agreed to start doing some practice SAT tests on the Internet. - He also agreed to start applying to US Universities to meet the deadline for 2013 entry. - The next session was scheduled for Friday December 21, 2012 at 3:00 PM.

Career Coaching Session #6: Friday January 18, 2013

- Paul is seriously thinking of going to Miami Killian High School for September 2013. He wants to focus on the sciences and especially biology in order to prepare for applying to medical school in University for September 2014. - His parents and uncle who lives in Florida are helping him with the application process. His uncle is a teacher as well as soccer coach and this should help Paul. - Paul's father went to Killian High School when he was younger and this should help Paul to get in. - He is aiming to take his SAT exams in March 2013, and has enrolled to take private lessons from Mrs. Christopher - Paul hopes to get either a partial or full scholarship based on his SAT scores as well as University soccer camps which he plans on attending at Easter or summer of 2013. - We agreed to one more session for Paul to discuss the results of his MEIQ assessment. Acknowledgements from Session #5: - I acknowledged Paul for his perseverance is coming to the Career Coaching sessions. - I also acknowledged him for completing the MEIQ assessment. - I also acknowledged him for realizing that his studies and career are more important for his future than soccer, especially if he is not drafted to play on a professional soccer team. Takeaways from Session #5: - Paul feels better about trying to get into Killian High School to do one more year before going to University, since he will then be 18 years old instead of 17 when he enters University. Action Plan from Session #5: - He also agreed to start taking practice lessons for the SAT tests which he plans to sit in March. - He also agreed to apply to Miami Killian High School with the help of his parents and uncle who lives in Florida, for September 2013 entry. - Come for one last session to discuss the results of his MEIQ assessment. - The next session was scheduled for Friday January 25, 2013 at 3:00 PM.
