Career Coaching Session #1: Monday 25 August 2014

- Ariti's E-mail address is ariti.gopaul - Ariti is 30 years old. - She attended secondary school at San Fernando Secondary School. - She then obtained her Bachelors of Science from University of Greenwich, and then achieved her MBA from Edinburgh School of Business at Heriot-Watt University. - She is considering doing her Ph. D. in the future. She was going to start a law degree two years ago, but then her father passed away suddenly, and she then got very busy at work. - She is currently working in the IT Department at Massy Group in the capacity of Supervisor of Business Systems. - She is is looking for a career change because she is unhappy in her current possition at Massy Group, and because it takes her three hours of driving each way to go back and forth from work. This, combined with the high demands of a career in IT, has caused Ariti considerable stress in her life to the point that it is really affecting her health negatively. - I discussed the results of the VoSCA assessment with Ariti, specifically her scores in the various categories of Interests, Intelligence Types, Values, and Work Styles. She essentially wants to be able to influence companies in a positive way so that employees can benefit from the work she does. - I also asked her if she would be willing to complete the Values Profile assessment as this would also help her in discerning the best career path to match her values, and she said yes. - We also discussed Ariti's spirituality, and she said that she had a deep interest in spirituality, and has read the holy books of many religions. Takeaways from Session #1: - Ariti liked the process of doing the assessment she feels a little clearer about the process of career discovery. Action Plan from Session #1: - Ariti will review the VoSCA report in more detail. - She also agreed to research on the Internet using the O*Net Online Career Research Tool (www.onetonline.org) the recommended careers which she scored 7 or more out of 10, and document her research in this password-protected blog under the section at the end called "Leave a Reply". Career Coaching Session #2: Friday 29 August 2014

- Ariti and I discussed the results of her Values Profile assessment. The results below are a summary of Ariti's top values - those that are most important to her and on which she bases her life decisions and goals. Her Core Value is her top value overall. Her Work Value is her top value in her professional life, and takes into account aspects like career path, work tasks, and job environment. Her Personal Value is her top value in her personal life and reflects issues related to relationships, hobbies, and world view. Top Core Value: Social Values Those who place importance on social values enjoy being helpful, kind and agreeable. They think it's important to try to find the good in everyone, and have faith that if they dig deep enough, they'll find it. They give of themselves, whether on a small scale (e.g. by spending time with a friend in need), or on a global scale (e.g. by volunteering for a human rights organization). In helping others overcome obstacles, people with social values hope to assist them in becoming the best they can be. They are giving and compassionate individuals. Social people likely become passionately angry at signs of social injustice. They enjoy and benefit from being with others, both in their work and personal sphere, and as a result, seek out jobs and activities where this is possible. In times of crisis and change, people with social values are both a source of comfort for their family and friends, and able to be comforted by them as well. Top Personal Value: Realistic Values For people whose top personal value is realistic, their general attitude can best be described in one word - practical. The thoughts and concerns of realistic people never stray far from the "real" world. Friends and family members would probably describe realistic people as down-to-earth, sometimes even to a fault. People with this value are rarely known to entertain pipe dreams, may even shun anything (and sometimes anyone) that is too idealistic, and are known to tell it like it is. Their common sense, pragmatic approach to life is great for dealing with concrete problems like financial issues, but abstract matters of the heart can be an area of discomfort for some realistic people. Hobbies and interests for people with this type are likely to be simple, but often involve physical activity or working with their hands. Top Work Value: Aesthetic Values People for whom aesthetic values are important in work settings love being given tasks and projects that allow them to flex their creative muscle. In fact, to be tied down to any form of structure, be it in the form of rules or work approach, would make them feel stifled. Aesthetic people also need to be given time to "incubate" ideas. They have to be given the opportunity to work at their own pace and follow their own approach, knowing that masterpieces aren't created in a day. Given that they are constantly drawn to and appreciate beauty and harmony, it would be a bit of a faux pas for the appearance of their work environment to not follow this trend. Much like social people love having contact with the public, aesthetic people want to be surrounded by splendor. I asked Ariti how she would feel if she was in this position at Massy Group, and after extensive research and interacting with various managers and divisions, wrote her report, but then only some of her recommendations were acted on. She said that wouldn't surprise for Massy Group because many of the managers have been there a long time. She said that she would still get job satisfaction knowing that she did her job to the best of her ability, and that at least some of her recommendations were acted on, and brought benefit to the employees. Takeaways from Session #2: - Ariti is feeling more confident that her tenure in the IT field is coming to an end. - She is also feeling better that her career shortlist is being narrowed down. Career Coaching Session #3: Thursday 4 September 2014

- Ariti and I discussed the results of her MEIQ assessment. Her overall results were as follows:

- Ariti's score on this assessment is satisfactory, but there is room for improvement. Overall, she is adequately skilled at understanding and dealing with emotions, but she needs to further develop her skills. Awareness is key to helping her find the motivation to improve in this area, and knowing which areas she most needs to work on developing. - The following is a summarized version of Ariti's results, categorized as Strengths, Potential Strengths, and Limitations: Strengths

Action Plan from Session #4: - Ariti would like me to discuss the results of her career discernment process with the HR Manager Angela Hamel-Smith prior to her discussing it with her. - If Massy Group is willing to create and offer the position of Management Analyst to her, Ariti would strongly like to pursue this career for the foreseeable future at Massy. - Finally, she hopes that the position of Management Analyst would allow her flexibility in terms of her travel time to and from her home location in south Trinidad because she currently spends at least six hours per day commuting back and forth from home to work, which causes a lot of stress and wasted time.
