Career Coaching Session #1: Monday 9 March 2015

- Dunstan's E-mail address is dunstan.lodge@gmail.com - Dunstan is 54 years old and is married with a son and a daughter. - He currently works at Beacon. He started at Beacon in June 2008, and so he's been there a total of 6 1/2 years. He is currently a VP, and manages approximately 40 staff members. What Dunstan likes the most about his current job is coaching and helping his employees to achieve their best potential. - He attended secondary school at St. Mary's College from 1971 - 1978. He graduated there with his "O" Levels and his "A" Levels in Biology, Economics and Spanish. He shared with me that even back then, he wasn't sure what career path he would be passionate about, and hence the reason that he took such a broad range of subjects at "A" Levels. - Dunstan did not attend university out of secondary school, but he did start a degree in Psychology at CUC, and was there from 2002 - 2004, but didn't finish it. - From 1988 to 1995, he worked at Algico in positions ranging from Underwriter to Senior Manager. He resigned from Algico because of the high stress level, especially around budget time. - He then worked at a friend's company (General Adjusters Limited) from January 1996 to January 2000. - Dunstan then started his own business in car sales, which he ran for approximately 5 years from 2000 to 2005. He closed it down for financial reasons. - He then worked for 18 months as a Project Manager at a market research company, and then was unemployed for another 18 months. - He then worked at Insurance Broking for 4 months, followed by another 6 month stint at his friend's company General Adjusters Limited. - He then joined Beacon in June 2008, and has been there for the past 6 1/2 years. - I asked Dunstan what career he would ideally like and he said that being a Coach with specialties in Business Executive Coaching, Career Coaching and Life Coaching would be his ideal career when he retires from Beacon at age 60. - Dunstan stressed that he wants a career that will give him the satisfaction making people's lives better and more meaningful. - He said that he started his journey in 1995 to try to find the right path for his life passion and purpose, and that journey still continues today. - He shared that he has always had a "coaching" personality, frequently asking people if they were happy and fulfilled at their current jobs. - I asked him how he would rate his emotional intelligence, and he said that he is emotionally mature. He stressed that relationships with people always formed the core of his business dealings, and he has built many long-lasting friendships with others. - I discussed the results of the VoSCA assessment with Dunstan, specifically his scores in the various categories of Interests, Intelligence Types, Values, and Work Styles. Takeaways from Session #1: - Dunstan liked the process of doing the assessment he feels clearer about the process of career discovery. Action Plan from Session #1: - Dunstan agreed to review the VoSCA report in more detail. - He also agreed to research on the Internet using the O*Net Online Career Research Tool (www.onetonline.org) the recommended careers above which he scored 6 or more out of 10, and document his research in this password-protected blog under the section at the end called “Leave a Reply”. Career Coaching Session #2: Wednesday 1 April 2015

- Dunstan shared with me that there are currently two serious purchasers for Beacon, and that he is actively involved in the potential sale of Beacon to these two prospective purchasers. This is causing him to not be as motivated at work as he normally is, which is a negative in his life right now. - However, this is causing him to have more time for exercising and for his wife, which are both positives for Dunstan. - As a result of the possible sale of Beacon, Dunstan is feeling less secure about his job there, even though Beacon is being open about the process with all 200 employees. Beacon's time frame for a potential sale of the company is the end of May 2015. - Dunstan feels that the decision to sell Beacon, which is essentially a family business, was a flawed one, and this has caused him some frustration lately. - Dunstan now feels that his time horizon to transition to his new career has decreased from five to two years. He is seriously considering his own business as a Business Executive/Life Coach as well as a Business Management Analyst. - The following careers from the VoSCA assessment still interest Dunstan: #1 Business Executive/Life Coach (9.5/10) #2 Business Management Analyst (9/10) #3 Training and Development Managers (9/10) - Next, we discussed the results of Dunstan's Values Profile assessment, and the results below are a summary of his top values - those that are most important to him and on which he bases his life decisions and goals. His Core Value is his top value overall. His Work Value is his top value in his professional life, and takes into account aspects like career path, work tasks, and job environment. His Personal Value is his top value in his personal life and reflects issues related to relationships, hobbies, and world view. Top Core Value: Social Values Those who place importance on social values enjoy being helpful, kind and agreeable. They think it's important to try to find the good in everyone, and have faith that if they dig deep enough, they'll find it. They give of themselves, whether on a small scale (e.g. by spending time with a friend in need), or on a global scale (e.g. by volunteering for a human rights organization). In helping others overcome obstacles, people with social values hope to assist them in becoming the best they can be. They are giving and compassionate individuals. Social people likely become passionately angry at signs of social injustice. In their free time they seek to be surrounded by those they care about, as relationships in general are very important to them. On a wider scale, they may start social causes or respect and support those people who fight for them. Those with social values have a knack for networking and connecting with others - they simply cannot imagine their lives without the camaraderie of others. While almost anyone would dislike conflict, people with strong social values are particularly affected by it. It bothers them to see others in pain or to see a relationship break apart, and so they will strive to help, heal, and resolve disagreements. Top Work Value: Aesthetic Values People for whom aesthetic values are important in work settings love being given tasks and projects that allow them to flex their creative muscle. In fact, to be tied down to any form of structure, be it in the form of rules or work approach, would make them feel stifled. Aesthetic people also need to be given time to "incubate" ideas. They have to be given the opportunity to work at their own pace and follow their own approach, knowing that masterpieces aren't created in a day. Given that they are constantly drawn to and appreciate beauty and harmony, it would be a bit of a faux pas for the appearance of their work environment to not follow this trend. Much like social people love having contact with the public, aesthetic people want to be surrounded by splendor. Takeaways from Session #2: - Dunstan feels better that he has a plan to accelerate his new career path from 5 years down to 2 years, as this alleviates some of the stress that he is currently feeling at Beacon. Career Coaching Session #3: Friday 10 April 2015

- Dunstan shared that even of the sale of Beacon does not go through by the end of May, he still wants to move on. - Page 18 of the VaPro report dealing with Pride really struck a note with Dunstan. It stated the following: "Dunstan either has not, as of yet, accomplished something that he feels he can be proud of, or simply does not consider a sense of accomplishment to be of major importance. He does not make a point to seek out opportunities to prove himself, or to leave his mark on the world." - Dunstan said that he has a "transformational" way of dealing with people, especially those whom he manages. This naturally feeds into the Coaching profession. - Unless he sells his home and builds a smaller one, then Dunstan said that he has to get another full-time job aligned with his passion after he leaves Beacon in approximately two years. This means that he would probably keep his five-year horizon for starting his own business in Coaching. - A full-time job at another company must deal with the transformational aspect of employees' lives, and it must have the correct model of employment, which for Dunstan is the ROWE model (Results Only Work Environment). - Dunstan said that he feels more comfortable one-on-one in dealing with people as opposed to in groups. - He wants to build better habits in 2015 to achieve his essential few goals, like a better and more consistent exercise routine, and figuring out his future career path. - Dunstan is strongly leaning towards Business Executive/Life Coaching with an emphasis on "Habit Coaching" and "Essentialist Coaching" based on to books that he is currently reading. - Whether is another full-time job or his own business, Dunstan needs to focus more on helping to transform people's lives rather than systems in order to feel fulfilled. - Finally, we discussed the results of Dunstan's MEIQ assessment, and Dunstan's score on this assessment 129/155 (97 percentile) is quite good. Overall, he is quite capable of understanding and dealing with emotions.
