Leadership Coaching Session #1: Wednesday 7 March 2018

- Rakesh is the Zone Leader for the blow moulding area and has six people reporting to him - He has been at Blue Waters for 11 years. - He loves his job and fixing machines. - He is more into administration and paperwork, and less hands-on. - He would rate his job at Blue Waters as 8/10 - Things that Rakesh believes can be improved at Blue Waters are (ANONYMOUSLY): (i) There should be more consultation with his team before decisions are made (ii) Upper management should listen more to his team's recommendations (iii) There should be more acknowledgement (iv) There is often not compensation and rewards given that were even promised. (v) Lack of cohesiveness at upper management (vi) Generally, in the company, communication lines are not as efficient as they could be. - Below is a summarized version of Rakesh's results, characterized as Strengths, Potential Strengths, and Limitations. What follows are some ideas for communicating your vision.

Make it a part of the routine. On all hand outs and memos provided to employees, also print the vision statement. This will ingrain the statement into their minds without pushing it too much. Periodically discuss how different decisions and behaviors will affect the vision of the organization.
Communicate your own excitement about the vision. Managers tend to set an example that is then modeled by employees. Therefore, if you are excited about the goals and behaviors set forth in the company’s vision they may be too. If you find that you cannot really get excited about the vision, perhaps it needs to be reworked into something more enticing.
Work on your communication skills as a whole. By improving your ability to communicate in general, your ideas and vision will also come across more clearly.
Be accepting of employees’ ideas. By being open to employees’ ideas, they will likely be more open to your own vision.
If confidence is an issue for you, work on it. Part of being able to convince others of your ideas is self-confidence. If you are not sure of yourself, others will find it difficult to place their trust in you as well. Prepare your arguments. To plead your case in court, you wouldn’t go in unprepared, would you? Do the same when presenting a new idea to employees. Try to anticipate questions they may have and prepare solid responses.

- We discussed the fact that you and your team are currently involved in overhauling one of the production machines at Blue Waters, and this has you very busy. - You shared with me that you are expressing your emotions more with God as you drive home, and that you are finding this helpful. - You also shared that you were trying to be more assertive with your wife, in terms of expressing your opinions as well as your likes and dislikes when you go shopping for home renovation items. Takeaways from Session #3: - You found that expressing your emotions more and asserting yourself more are helping to avoid your emotions from becoming bottled up inside of you. Recognize emotions for what they are. We have been taught that emotions are reactions, often uncontrolled, to situations or people around us. This isn't the case. Your emotions are a signal; they are messages that have the potential to offer you important information if you're willing to take the time to reflect on what you're feeling. So when you get upset with your colleagues when the printer is always missing paper when you're using it, stop and ask yourself: Is my anger really related to the paper, or something more? Maybe you're upset because deep down you feel disrespected, or feel that people take advantage of you. Maybe you're using the paper situation to vent your anger about a more serious, unresolved issue. The point is, don't let negative emotions simmer (or boil over) unchallenged. Milk them for information.
Emotions and logic are not enemies. Many people believe that emotions have no place in the decision-making process, but the truth is, your emotions (or intuition, gut instinct, etc.) and your logic can provide useful information when making a decision. The bottom line is that emotions and logic are two sides of the same coin: Emotions are a message, while logic is the means in which we interpret that message.
Don't brush aside your gut instinct or intuition. Gut instinct is that voice in your head, that warning bell, that's trying to tell you that something isn't right. Some refer to it as a sixth sense. Whatever the label, it can offer us valuable information if we take a moment to listen. Those who ignore this inner voice can often end up regretting it. This doesn't mean that logic has no benefits. The perfect balance, in fact, would be to think a situation through, and then going with what feels right.
The good and the bad. Both good and bad feelings facilitate the thinking process by allowing us to view things from different perspectives. Did you ever notice how, when thinking pessimistically about a problem, you come up with solutions that are in line with that thinking, and when you think positively, the perspective and solutions change? Our feelings, good and bad, offer us different perspectives on the world. While one perspective may be more beneficial than the other, both angles offer us valuable information about the world around us, and about ourselves.
Take small steps if you're not used to expressing emotions. Start with those that are the least intimidating, like gratitude, awe, or boredom. For example, try offering someone you are comfortable with a genuine compliment, and then take it one step further to an expression of appreciation. When you need to communicate a negative feeling, start by writing down how you feel before saying it. Like learning any new skill, emotional expression will get easier with time and practice.
Know the consequences of suppression. Like a soda can that has been shaken one too many times, a buildup of negative emotions can either result in one messy explosion or a whole lot of fussing and fuming on the inside. This isn't a matter of choosing the lesser of two evils - both are unhealthy for you. Bottled-up emotions can result in physical ailments, not to mention the damage it causes to your peace of mind and your relationships. A build-up of frustration will seep out whether you like it or not, often through passive aggression, snappiness, lack of tolerance or bitter remarks. Find a healthy emotional outlet that works for you - writing your feelings out, talking to someone, etc.
Work on developing healthy self-control. When you act on impulse, it is the lower part of your brain - your so-called "reptilian brain" - that is taking charge. Thankfully, we all have a cerebral cortex, which means we have the capacity to reason. Before acting impulsively, command your cerebral cortex to evaluate the situation you find yourself in. Then you can determine if you should modify your reaction to the situation, or for that matter, take any action at all.

#2 You seem to struggle to act independently

Consider the implications for your life of always putting aside what you want to do or what is important to you to always accommodate other people's wishes.
Remember that other people constantly change their opinions about you, and that looking for positive affirmation from others by always trying to be a people-pleaser usually never works anyway. Try to see yourself as a valuable human being in the eyes of God, who is the only one whose opinion of us matters!

#3 You are not very assertive

Assert yourself when necessary. Being assertive requires a certain degree of comfort with vulnerability, and that's probably one of the main reasons why people hesitate to speak up for themselves. Assertiveness means risking dissention, rejection, and embarrassment. It can spark conflict if the message doesn't go over well. If you find it difficult to speak up or say "no" to others, remember this: Not speaking up communicates to others the erroneous belief that your needs don't matter; that you are not worthy enough to ask for what we want.
Assertiveness training can be extremely beneficial, along with the realization that being assertive does not imply or require aggression.

#4 You have difficulty adapting your social skills to the circumstances around you

Improve your confidence and self-esteem: One of the main reasons why all people fail to interact with each other is because some of these individuals really lack confidence. They fear the consequences of what they say and thus stay tongue-tied. The lack of confidence prevents them from presenting their opinions when there are group discussions. This has a bad impact on their reputation in professional circles. Silent individuals are often exploited and this results in failures and losses. You need to first ensure that you are perfectly confident. You should always have the confidence to express your opinions.
Join in office discussions: Office is a place where individuals tend to discuss about several topics including politics and films. You should have the confidence to take part in office discussions without any hesitation. If there is an argument or debate, you must strongly present your thoughts and ideas with justification to support the same. You must have an open mind during office discussions. If someone else comes up with a statement and a justification that is right but against your view, you should be able to acknowledge the fact that he is right and you are wrong. An open mind helps you evolve and be a wise human being.
Furnish your sense of humor: You cannot impress your audience if you lack sense of humour. Sense of humour is a prime ingredient in making an impression. You need to be humorous even while making presentations or speaking up during debates. People listen to you only in two occasions; if you voice the same views that they support or if you are humorous and interesting. It is not always possible to share the same views but you can definitely draw the attention of your audience to you with a good sense of humour.
Try and understand human nature: Understanding human nature helps you interact with people in professional and personal circles in a better way. When you observe human nature and understand why people react to situations in a particular way, you become capable of taking the right decisions. Right decisions help you ascend the ladder of success easily. People who do not understand the core human nature tend to lose out good people because they don’t give people a second chance. Great leaders are always people who understand the human nature and act accordingly.
Training your juniors: Individuals with years of experience in a certain industry are ideal trainers as they know the possible pitfalls and hurdles in a particular trade. They should guide the young trainees so that the wheel is not reinvented and time, resources and effort are saved while performing the tasks.

#5 Your mindset could stand to be more positive

Start the day with positive affirmation. How you start the morning sets the tone for the rest of the day. Have you ever woken up late, panicked, and then felt like nothing good happened the rest of the day? This is likely because you started out the day with a negative emotion and a pessimistic view that carried into every other event you experienced. Instead of letting this dominate you, start your day with positive affirmations. Talk to yourself in the mirror, even if you feel silly, with statements like, “Today will be a good day” or “I’m going to be awesome today.” You’ll be amazed how much your day improves.
Focus on the good things, however small. Almost invariably, you’re going to encounter obstacles throughout the day—there’s no such thing as a perfect day. When you encounter such a challenge, focus on the benefits, no matter how slight or unimportant they seem. For example, if you get stuck in traffic, think about how you now have time to listen to the rest of your favorite podcast. If the store is out of the food you want to prepare, think about the thrill of trying something new.
Turn failures into lessons. You aren’t perfect. You’re going to make mistakes and experience failure in multiple contexts, at multiple jobs and with multiple people. Instead of focusing on how you failed, think about what you’re going to do next time—turn your failure into a lesson. Conceptualize this in concrete rules. For example, you could come up with three new rules for managing projects as a result.
Transform negative self-talk into positive self-talk. Negative self-talk can creep up easily and is often hard to notice. You might think I’m so bad at this or I shouldn’t have tried that. But these thoughts turn into internalized feelings and might cement your conceptions of yourself. When you catch yourself doing this, stop and replace those negative messages with positive ones. For example, I’m so bad at this becomes Once I get more practice, I’ll be way better at this. I shouldn’t have tried becomes That didn’t work out as planned—maybe next time.
Focus on the present. I’m talking about the present—not today, not this hour, only this exact moment. You might be getting chewed out by your boss, but what in this exact moment is happening that’s so bad? Forget the comment he made five minutes ago. Forget what he might say five minutes from now. Focus on this one, individual moment. In most situations, you’ll find it’s not as bad as you imagine it to be. Most sources of negativity stem from a memory of a recent event or the exaggerated imagination of a potential future event. Stay in the present moment.
Find positive friends, mentors and co-workers. When you surround yourself with positive people, you’ll hear positive outlooks, positive stories and positive affirmations. Their positive words will sink in and affect your own line of thinking, which then affects your words and similarly contributes to the group. Finding positive people to fill up your life can be difficult, but you need to eliminate the negativity in your life before it consumes you. Do what you can to improve the positivity of others, and let their positivity affect you the same way.
