Career Coaching Session #1: Saturday January 26, 2013

- Brian's E-mail address is briananderson_1@hotmail.com - Brian is 25 years old and he attended secondary school in Trinidad - He is currently working in the Accounting department at Blue Waters. - We discussed Brian's family at length and here is a summary:

He has an older brother who is 29 years old, graduated as a Chemical Engineer but went back to school to become a Petroleum Engineer.
He has an younger brother who is 21 years old but is not very ambitious. Brian and his mother are constantly having to provide him with guidance and motivation to make something of his life.
His mother is 63 years old, and works hard for her husband and sons. She tries to give advice based on what she knows and on her life experiences. She is a Hindu by religion but raised her sons Roman Catholic.
His father is 81 years old and is very set in his ways, and very self-centered and demanding. He is Roman Catholic and prays every day. But he is a drain on the family as he does not see how he affects everyone by his ways. He does not seem to understand how he has cramped Brian's social life, as he makes him feel guilty whenever he goes out with his friends. Brian helps his father a lot with his physical therapy, but his Dad does not seem to always acknowledge Brian for what he does for him, which can lead to a lot of frustration on the part of Brian, especially when his Dad gives him a hard time when he tries to socialize with his friends.

- Brian shared his view that the distractions of this world including our very busy work schedules, keep us from having sufficient quiet time to meditate on our lives, and to discover our true purpose in life. He finds this to be his current dilemma, especially when it comes to execute some of the ideas for bettering his life. - I asked Brian to picture how he would like his life to look at age 30 (five years from now), and here was his vision:

Career Related - He would like to have a balanced career life with time for his family. He would like to enjoy and be good at his career. Finally, he would like to have financial stability in his career.
Family Life - He would like to have a at least a fiancee or a wife, and possibly his first child.
Social Life - He would like to have a better social life. He had two girlfriends in the past, but his father has been the main source of his dampened social life.

- Brian seems to lean more toward a career in the field of entrepreneurship related to clothing, drinks, health, and personal training. He also likes music a lot, and would like to write songs. - I discussed the results of the VoSPA assessment with Brian, specifically his scores in the various categories of Interests, Intelligence Types, Values, and Work Styles. His scores can be reviewed in the report itself. - Here are the careers that the VoSPA assessment recommended for Brian and how he rated them in terms of his passion level (1 is no passion and 10 is the highest passion):

- We discussed how Brian would rate himself in terms of his emotional IQ (EIQ) and he said he tends to be very emotionally calm. I stressed the importance of developing a healthy EIQ as Psychologists have recently discovered that it is as important and maybe even more important than having a high IQ score. I asked him if he would be willing to do the MEIQ assessment and he said yes. - I also asked him if he would be willing to complete the Values Profile assessment as this would also help him in discerning the best career path to match his values, and he said yes. - We also discussed Brian's spirituality, and he said even though he was raised Roman Catholic, he and his family currently only go to Mass at Christmas and Easter. Acknowledgements from Session #1: - I acknowledged Brian for completing the VoSPA assessment - I also acknowledged him for coming to these Life and Career Coaching sessions to get a better understanding of what career path he would like to pursue, and to have accountability for the ideas he currently has for bettering his life. Takeaways from Session #1: - Brian liked the process of doing the assessment he feels a little clearer about the process of coaching. Action Plan from Session #1: - Brian will review the VoSPA report in more detail and research on the Internet using the O*Net Online Career Research Tool (www.onetonline.org) the recommended careers above which he scored 5 or more out of 10, and document his research in this password-protected blog. These careers are:
