Life Coaching Session #1: Wednesday 13 April 2016

- I discussed the results of the Multidimensional Emotional IQ assessment with Darius. His score on the assessment (95/155, 37th percentile) is satisfactory, but there is room for improvement. Overall, he is adequately skilled at understanding and dealing with emotions, but he needs to further develop his skills. Awareness is key to helping him find the motivation to improve in this area, and knowing which areas he most needs to work on developing. - The following is a summarized version of Darius's results, categorized as Strengths, Potential Strengths, and Limitations: Strengths He ruminates, but not excessively He typically acts in accordance with his values The manner in which Darius would resolve conflict situations on the test was healthy Potential Strengths He has a satisfactory emotional IQ level He possesses some emotional self-awareness His approach to problem solving is sometimes conducive to resolution He is doing reasonably well in the area of Emotional Understanding He chose some reasonably good forms of resolution for others' conflict situations on the test He is somewhat socially insightful He is doing reasonably well in the area of Emotional Management He is reasonably resilient/hardy He is reasonably self-motivated He is moderately driven towards further self-development He is sometimes able to let go/rise above minor issues He is moderately assertive He seems to be reasonably content Limitations Improvement is required in the area of Emotional Identification, Perception, and Expression He doesn't seem to be entirely aware of his strengths and weaknesses He is not very comfortable with emotions in general He struggled with recognizing emotions depicted on the test Improvement is required in the area of Emotional Facilitation of Thought His mindset could stand to be more positive He struggled with the emotional integration aspect of the test His ability to empathize needs improvement His impulse control needs improvement His self-control needs improvement He needs to work on using more healthy coping techniques He has difficulty adapting his social skills to the circumstances around him His self-esteem needs to be strengthened He seems to struggle to act independently His flexibility is limited Acknowledgements from Life Coaching Session #1: - I acknowledged Darius for completing the MEIQ-Ab assessment. Review the MEIQ-Ab report in more detail to see exactly what your strengths are (high scores), what your potential strengths are (reasonable scores), and what your limitations are (low scores).
See whether you agree with this analysis of your emotional IQ, and if so, you might want to try remembering your most important strengths and your most significant limitations, especially the ones that you have decided to work on.

#2 His mindset could stand to be more positive

View setbacks as short-lived. Whenever you are feeling overwhelmed and find yourself plunging into negativity, remind yourself that things can get better. If you're having a hard time in a class you're taking, for example, or you're having relationship problems, look at it as temporary. Whatever the situation, you can take proactive steps to deal with the underlying issues. Even if you are faced with something that you will have to deal with for a lifetime (like a health problem or family issue), there is always some way to improve the situation. You will grow stronger, heal, or find better ways to cope.
The good and the bad. Both good and bad feelings facilitate the thinking process by allowing us to view things from different perspectives. Did you ever notice how, when thinking pessimistically about a problem, you come up with solutions that are in line with that thinking, and when you think positively, the perspective and solutions change? Our feelings, good and bad, offer us different perspectives on the world. While one perspective may be more beneficial than the other, both angles offer us valuable information about the world around us, and about ourselves.

#3 His impulse control needs improvement

Know Your Values: When you know what is important to you, you are able to make choices that lead you to happiness and success.
Know What You Want to Achieve: Ensure you have clearly defined goals. What is it that you want to achieve exactly? Having a clear understanding of what you want to achieve longer-term can help you make a choice in delaying gratification to help you reach your ultimate goal.
Create a Plan: When you understand your values and know what you want to achieve, creating a plan to help you get there can remind you of the choices you need to make along the way and reinforce the process of delaying gratification.
Prioritize: Being able to prioritize what is important to you and what you want to achieve helps you make the choice to delay gratification.
Reward Yourself: Delaying gratification can be hard-work. Depending on what you want to achieve, it may take weeks, months, years, and sometimes even decades. Breaking down your goals and rewarding yourself along the way can remind yourself that delaying gratification is leading you to where you want to go.

#4 His flexibility is limited

Try to believe that when one door closes, another better door will open.
This is the key to flexibility because we often become afraid and inflexible when a situation does not work out to our liking.
Instead, try to take things in stride and have the confidence to know that God is in control, and wants the best for you always.
