Career Coaching Session #1: Monday August 5, 2013

- Jacob's E-mail address is j.wihby@gmail.com - Jacob is 17 years old and he attends secondary school at Fatima College - He is currently going into his final year (Upper 6), and is taking the following subjects for CAPE: Pure Math, Applied Math, Physics, Caribbean, and Communications Studies. - I discussed the results of the VoSCA-St assessment with Jacob, specifically his scores in the various categories of Interests, Intelligence Types, Values, and Work Styles. His scores can be reviewed in the report itself. - When he was younger, Jacob thought of becoming a pilot but he has since outgrown that career. - Next, he thought about a career in Aviation Engineering but after speaking with others about that field, he found that it would not be rewarding. - Jacob then considered a career in Civil Engineering, and although this is still a possibility, he is not sure about it. - Generally, Jacob seems to lean more toward a career in the field of Engineering - We discussed how Jacob would rate himself in terms of his emotional IQ (EIQ) and he said that he would rate himself somewhere between a balanced and inexpressive type of emotionalism. I stressed the importance of developing a healthy EIQ as Psychologists have recently discovered that it is as important and maybe even more important than having a high IQ score. Career Coaching Session #2: Monday August 19, 2013

- Jacob did his research on the various careers from his shortlist and documented his findings in the blog. He confirmed that the careers on his new shortlist in order of his passion level are: #1 Agricultural Engineers (9/10) #2 Petroleum Engineers (9/10) #3 Environmental Engineers (8/10) #4 Energy Engineers (7/10) #5 Civil Engineers (7/10) - I asked Jacob what his preferences were with regard to where he would like to attend university. He said that England was his first preference because he has family there, and prefers the system of Education. Next would be the US, then Canada, and finally Trinidad. - Next, we discussed the results of Jacob's Values Profile assessment, and the results below are a summary of Jacob's top values - those that are most important to him and on which he bases his life decisions and goals. His Core Value is his top value overall. His Work Value is his top value in his professional life, and takes into account aspects like career path, work tasks, and job environment. His Personal Value is his top value in his personal life and reflects issues related to relationships, hobbies, and world view. Top Core Value: Social Values Those who place importance on social values enjoy being helpful, kind and agreeable. They think it's important to try to find the good in everyone, and have faith that if they dig deep enough, they'll find it. They give of themselves, whether on a small scale (e.g. by spending time with a friend in need), or on a global scale (e.g. by volunteering for a human rights organization). In helping others overcome obstacles, people with social values hope to assist them in becoming the best they can be. They are giving and compassionate individuals. Social people likely become passionately angry at signs of social injustice. They enjoy and benefit from being with others, both in their work and personal sphere, and as a result, seek out jobs and activities where this is possible. In times of crisis and change, people with social values are both a source of comfort for their family and friends, and able to be comforted by them as well. Top Personal Value: Social Values For people whose top personal value is social, their interests, hobbies, home life and general attitude will revolve around people. In their free time they seek to be surrounded by those they care about, as relationships in general are very important to them. On a wider scale, they may start social causes or respect and support those people who fight for them. Those with social values have a knack for networking and connecting with others - they simply cannot imagine their lives without the camaraderie of others. While almost anyone would dislike conflict, people with strong social values are particularly affected by it. It bothers them to see others in pain or to see a relationship break apart, and so they will strive to help, heal, and resolve disagreements. Top Work Value: Realistic Values People for whom realistic values are important in work settings are happiest and utilize their talents best in positions where they can see tangible results of the fruits of their labor. They need to feel that they are accomplishing something with their work, as they desire to be productive and make an impact in some way. Hands-on projects are often their specialty, although they excel at any task that requires a practical and systematic approach. People with realistic values are not afraid of hard work, but like barter systems of old, they want to make sure that they are given fair compensation for their efforts. Given their more down-to-earth personality, projects that require them to think "outside the box" may not be their specialty. - Note that the fourth category of careers above confirms some of the careers that are on Jacob's shortlist from the VoSCA assessment in session 1. What managers can do for employees with realistic values:

Allow them to work on more hands-on tasks and projects - where they are physically involved in the completion of a product.
Provide them with leadership roles that particularly involve showing others how to do a task.
Keep them busy - workers with realistic values enjoy being productive.
Make it clear how their position impacts the company - they need to know that their hard work is paying off and is providing a useful service.
Make sure communication over any instability in the company (industry trouble, cutbacks, etc.) is clear so that they can be prepared and plan ahead.
Make sure there is an established system for raises that these employees can work towards.
Communicate with fact-based arguments - and be straightforward. Realistic employees have little patience for those who are not sincere, or who "beat around the bush."
Allow them to participate in brainstorming and problem solving. With their common sense and grounded approach, they may be able to come up with practical solutions to complex problems.
Keep a look-out for potential clashes with more theoretical or aesthetic people. The realists' more pragmatic approach may be viewed as too simplistic for theorists, or too unimaginative for creative types.

- I asked Jacob if he would be willing to complete the Multidimensional IQ (MEIQ) assessment and he said yes. - I also E-mailed him the Microsoft Word interview script so that he can start interviewing professionals in the five careers on his shortlist. He said that his father can provide him with contacts in the fields of Petroleum and Civil Engineering, and I said that I would find contacts for him to interview in the fields of Agricultural, Energy, and Environmental Engineering. Takeaways from Session #2: - Jacob is getting more clarity about his career path, and he feels a bit more relieved that his shortlist has been narrowed down to just five careers from the 1,100 in the US Department of Labour's 2013 career database! Action Plan from Session #2: - Jacob agreed to review the VaPro assessment report in more detail. - He also agreed to complete the MEIQ assessment. - Jacob also agreed to use the Microsoft Word interview script (found at the top of this blog) to start interviewing professionals in the five careers on his shortlist. Career Coaching Session #3: Monday August 26, 2013

- We discussed Jacob's reflection of the careers on his current shortlist, and here are his current thoughts:

He is leaning towards eliminating Agricultural Engineering because it is not in high demand in Trinidad since the government effectively killed the sugar industry a number of years ago.
He is also leaning towards eliminating Civil Engineering because in Trinidad Civil Engineers act more as project managers.
He would like to add Marine Engineering to his shortlist of careers, making his current list:

#1 Petroleum Engineers (9/10) #2 Marine Engineers (9/10) #3 Environmental Engineers (8/10) #4 Energy Engineers (7/10) - We then discussed the results of Jacob's MEIQ assessment, and Jacob's score on this assessment was 105/155 (63%) is satisfactory, but there is room for improvement. Overall, he is adequately skilled at understanding and dealing with emotions, but he needs to further develop his skills. Awareness is key to helping him find the motivation to improve in this area, and knowing which areas he most needs to work on developing:

Takeaways from Session #3: - Jacob felt that the assessment results were accurate for the most part, and it provided him with more insight into his personality, and how to improve his overall emotional health, which will benefit him now and later in life. Action Plan from Session #3: - Jacob agreed to review the MEIQ report in more detail, and in particular, to read through the last section entitled "Advice" to understand ways and techniques to improve his EIQ. In particular, Jacob chose the following three areas to work on for the next year:

Career Coaching Session #4: Monday September 9, 2013

- Jacob and I discussed the various careers on his shortlist, and the information that he was able to gather from his formal and informal interviews. The list below shows his final opinions and ratings for these careers. #1 Marine Engineering (9/10) - This is the career that Jacob wants to pursue because:

He has always been interested in the field of Engineering
He is fascinated with ships and work they work
This field of Engineering is in high demand, both in Trinidad and abroad.
The salary level is quite good

# 2 Petroleum Engineering (8/10)

This is a field that interests Jacob, but he does not particularly like Chemistry, and has not taken it since Form 3

#3 Energy Engineering (7->8/10)

Jacob has an interest in this field of Engineering but is not sure how viable this career would be in Trinidad.
He will ask his neighbour who works at BP if they currently have any Energy Engineers on staff and what the future holds for this career.
He is considering doing a minor in this field along when he enrolls in Marine Engineering at University.

#4 Agricultural Engineering (7/10)

Jacob found that this is diminishing field in Trinidad because successive governments have ignored agriculture in terms if funding.

#5 Environmental Engineering (7/10)

Jacob interviewed a Trinidadian who lives abroad and who is an Environmental Engineer. She has worked on a few projects in Trinidad, but she shared that these projects were hard to get approved, and when they were completed, the government did not act on the recommendations. This essentially makes the field frustrating at the moment to get much job satisfaction.

- In considering where to go for his University education, Jacob shared that his parents told him that England is quite a lot more expensive than the US. Thus, he is taking lessons in preparation to write his ACT exams as opposed to his SAT exams. The reason for this is that he was told that the ACT's are more straightforward than the SAT's. - I asked Jacob if he had any other concerns other than his career path choice. He said that it will be hard for him to leave home because (i) he is afraid to be alone in a strange place, and (ii) it will be the first time in his life that he would lack ongoing parental support. However, Jacob shared that he has a good friend at Fatima who may join him when he goes away to University. I mentioned to Jacob that his faith in God will always be something that will comfort him and give him strength in times of loneliness and trial. I asked him if I could share a video that I prepared about a year ago based on Matthew 28:20, and he said yes.
