- Vanessa's E-mail address is vanessajodhan@dumore.net. - Vanessa is currently 35 years old and is the eldest of the Jodhan cousins. - She is currently doing an MBA in Logistics and Supply Chain Management at the School of Higher Education Limited. - She liked the module on Corporate Governance because it struck a cord with her. - She is much closer to her Uncle Dan than her own father Joey. - Vanessa feels that there are a lot of generational insecurities in the Jodhan family. - She went a lot to her Aunt in St. Vincent and lived a good life there. - Her Dad Joey cultivated a strong work ethic in Vanessa and her brother Alex. - Her Dad worked in aeronautical engineering for BWIA, and spent time in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) for 2-3 years. - When Joey came back to Trinidad and started working at Dumore, he wasn’t the same father. He brought a lot of anger home. - Vanessa had lots of adventures with her Dad before he joined Dumore, and they were not a conventional Indian family. - Joey, who is the oldest brother along with Jaisree (his twin), came into the business later than Roddy and Dan. They always made him feel that he didn’t contribute as much to the business. - Vanessa feels that Dumore “destroyed” her father. At that time, Joey started to see other women, even though he was still married to Vanessa’s mother. - Her father left her mother and is currently living with another woman, with whom he has two younger children. - Vanessa tries her best to get along with her step-siblings, but she doesn't particularly like the woman who her father is with. - She worked with the New Zealander Kelly Glass, on the telecom project for Digicel in Trinidad, Surinam (3 years) and Guyana. - She came into the Dumore business in her early twenties. - Vanessa is very strong and she believes that her Uncle Roddy and her own Dad to a degree, uses her and then “stabs” her in the back. She was raised very industrious and resourceful, and definitely not lazy. - Her Uncle Dan’s children are Jason, John and Michael. - The other families have parented their children with very different value systems, Vanessa and Alex were parented to have a strong work ethic. Vanessa thinks that their are compatibility issues that exist within the second generation cousins. Vanessa over the years have had many good memories with her cousins, but has reservations on their work ethics. - When her Aunt Kimberly came into the business, Dan and Roddy didn’t give her proper HR on-boarding with a specific Job Description. - Vanessa believes that her Aunt Kimberly is vindictive and greedy, but puts on a good front. - She also believes that her Aunt Kimberley brought a lot of conflict into the family. - Vanessa perceives her Uncle Roddy as a “sociopath”. - She also believes that all of the wealth of Dumore is not being kept within the business, and she even perceives a certain degree of dishonest practices. - Roddy and Kimberly have labelled Vanessa as “bipolar”, which is not fair because they don’t understand the symptoms that are associated with the bipolar condition. - Vanessa was heavily involved in the succession planning exercise with KPMG. She also went to Harvard in 2014 for the course on family business practices. - Vanessa’s brother Alex studied Mechanical Engineering in the UK, and came back to Trinidad he worked with Bouygues on the Hyatt waterfront project. He then worked with Kelly Glass in Kelectric, St. Vincent, then Karib Cable St Lucia, then Karib Cable Barbados. Alex came back to Trinidad in 2013 and started working with Dumore. - Alex is quite competent and a strong asset to Dumore. He recently resigned from Dumore because when his father Joey wanted to pass his shares onto Vanessa and Alex, Roddy resisted that. Alex will be out of the business by August 2017. - Vanessa feels that her Uncle Roddy uses his staff to disrespect her and to back-stab her. - The turning point for Vanessa with her Uncle Roddy occurred at a meeting in 2016 at Dumore when he disrespected and challenged her in front of the other staff members. She feels that some of the staff members do not respect her the same way anymore. - Dan’s runs the oil field division and Roddy’s division is Rentals and Transport. I asked Vanessa that if she gets along well with Dan, why is she not working with Dan? She said that she is not sure why and is something that she is open to exploring. - She said that the Oilfield Division financed Rentals Division over the years, and was the number 1 contributor of revenue; however with the slow down in the economy they are experiencing a loss of revenue. In 2017 Rentals and Transport Division is performing well but there are many areas where the Division is mismanaged.. - Roddy feels that Vanessa came to the Rentals and Transport division to spy on him. - In 2009 when Vanessa returned to Dumore she discovered the Rentals and Transport Division was being mismanaged, and there was a specific customer that the company worked for that was not invoiced for jobs completed dating back to over a year and a half. - Vanessa said that she is thinking of putting things in place to exit the business, and she also feels that her Uncle Roddy wants her to leave Dumore. Acknowledgements from Session #1: - I also acknowledged Vanessa for beginning these mediation sessions to try to bring some peace and order back to the Jodhan family and to Dumore Enterprises. Takeaways from Session #1: - Vanessa liked the process of being able to tell her side of the story. She feels that the mediation session that was scheduled previously with her father, Uncle Roddy and her was an ambush due to how she was informed of the meeting and how can it be mediation when she did not get a change to state her perspective on the matter.
