Flexible times and being his own boss. - Degree from UWI in Business Management with a minor in Marketing, some HR courses. He graduated from UWI in July 2014. - Since, then he has been doing some part-time work for his mother's company MSCTT (shipping company), and that's where Justin got his interest in logistics. - Justin has some experience with programming languages C++ and Java. - At Hillview, he took For CXC, POB, POA, Econ, History, Math, English, Computer Science (Cambridge), Integrated Science - For CAPE, he took: Caribbean, Accounts (Unit 1 and 2), Econ (Unit 1 and 2), MOB (Unit 1 and 2), Computer Science (Unit 1) - Justin likes more the research side of marketing. - Justin likes sports and in particular, football. - He was a peer counselor at Hillview, and he enjoyed it. - I discussed the results of the VoSCA assessment with Justin, specifically his scores in the various categories of Interests, Intelligence Types, Values, and Work Styles. Takeaways from Session #1: - Justin liked the process of doing the assessment he feels clearer about the process of career discovery. Action Plan from Session #1: - Justin agreed to review the VoSCA report in more detail. - He also agreed to research on the Internet using the O*Net Online Career Research Tool (www.onetonline.org) the recommended careers above which he scored 7 or more out of 10, and document his research in this password-protected blog under the section at the end called “Leave a Reply”. Career Coaching Session #1: Thursday 22 October 2015

- I discussed the results of the Values Profile assessment with Justin, and the results below are a summary of Justin's top values - those that are most important to him and on which he bases his life decisions and goals. His Core Value is his top value overall. His Work Value is his top value in his professional life, and takes into account aspects like career path, work tasks, and job environment. His Personal Value is his top value in his personal life and reflects issues related to relationships, hobbies, and world view. Top Core Value: Social Values Those who place importance on social values enjoy being helpful, kind and agreeable. They think it's important to try to find the good in everyone, and have faith that if they dig deep enough, they'll find it. They give of themselves, whether on a small scale (e.g. by spending time with a friend in need), or on a global scale (e.g. by volunteering for a human rights organization). In helping others overcome obstacles, people with social values hope to assist them in becoming the best they can be. They are giving and compassionate individuals. Social people likely become passionately angry at signs of social injustice. They enjoy and benefit from being with others, both in their work and personal sphere, and as a result, seek out jobs and activities where this is possible. In times of crisis and change, people with social values are both a source of comfort for their family and friends, and able to be comforted by them as well. Top Personal Value: Realistic Values For people whose top personal value is realistic, their general attitude can best be described in one word - practical. The thoughts and concerns of realistic people never stray far from the "real" world. Friends and family members would probably describe realistic people as down-to-earth, sometimes even to a fault. People with this value are rarely known to entertain pipe dreams, may even shun anything (and sometimes anyone) that is too idealistic, and are known to tell it like it is. Their common sense, pragmatic approach to life is great for dealing with concrete problems like financial issues, but abstract matters of the heart can be an area of discomfort for some realistic people. Hobbies and interests for people with this type are likely to be simple, but often involve physical activity or working with their hands. Top Work Value: Theoretical Values People for whom theoretical values are important in work settings are happiest and utilize their talents best when they are intellectually challenged. Much like Sherlock Holmes becoming melancholic when he didn't have a mind-boggling case to work on, theoretical people need to be doing something that involves conscious effort and thought. Set them to a task where they need to figure out the solution to a problem or make sense of abstract information or data, and they will make sense of it. Without challenge, they become apathetic. While they can do well on group projects, theoretical individuals may work best on their own, where they can research, theorize, and come up with their own ideas. Should they have to work with others, however, they tend to thrive best with those who share their values and appreciation for logic and knowledge, as they may clash with more creative types. I gave Justin some pointers for the interview process, especially to thank the person he is interviewing both at the start and at the end of the interview.
